The Pittsburgh Steelers watched as their AFC North foes, the Baltimore Ravens, got scarier on defense. It seemed like a nightmare scenario for Pittsburgh and the rest of the division as the Ravens reached a trade agreement with the Las Vegas Raiders. The deal would have sent superstar pass rusher Maxx Crosby to Baltimore in exchange for two first-round draft picks (the No. 14 overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, and a 2027 first-round selection). Steelers fans and analysts braced for a potential shift in the AFC North landscape, knowing Crosby’s relentless pass-rushing ability could cause serious problems for quarterbacks across the division. For Pittsburgh, it was not just about losing a rival battle, it was about facing a game-changing talent in every matchup against Baltimore.

However, the trade never went through. The Ravens rescinded the deal after citing concerns over Crosby’s knee during his physical. Many around the NFL were skeptical and suggested the Ravens used the medical claim as a way to back out while keeping their two valuable first-round selections. Critics called the move questionable, arguing Baltimore had acted to protect their draft capital rather than fully commit to the trade. For Crosby, the situation was frustrating because instead of joining a team ready to maximize his talents, he was left in uncertainty, with questions swirling around the failed deal and its true motives.
Amid the confusion, Crosby reached out to Steelers longtime captain Cam Heyward to explain what really happened in Baltimore. With his brother Connor Heyward signing with the Raiders, Cam saw an opportunity to get clarity directly from Crosby. The conversation became a candid discussion about the truth behind the rescinded trade. Pittsburgh fans who had been anxiously following every development finally got some insight. While the AFC North avoided an immediate nightmare, the story confirmed that something unusual had occurred, and Heyward now had firsthand knowledge of one of the NFL’s most mysterious trade situations.
"I actually reached out to Maxx Crosby and I was like, 'Bro, I don’t know if you are going to stay with the Raiders, but if you are, please take care of my brother and look out for him,'" Heyward said. "You know what Maxx's response was? He said, you know, because I also apologized and said I am so sorry to hear about the Ravens thing falling through, and he was like, 'F**k those dudes, I am staying with the f***ing Raiders.' I was like, 'Ok, I can respect that.'"
The Ravens ended up getting a deal done with another star pass rusher, Trey Hendrickson. They still got their pass rusher, but managed to keep their draft capital, which is why many around the league were so upset.

Heyward was pleased to see Crosby not join Baltimore for obvious reasons.
"I was happy he didn’t end up with the Ravens, you know, selfishly," Heyward said. "For him not going to the Ravens, you know, but to say he’s going to be in Las Vegas, made me happy because he’s going to be able to take care of little brother. I will just say the organization has been very accommodating to my little brother."
Steelers Fans See NFL's Unpredictable Side Through Maxx Crosby Saga
In the end, the Crosby saga highlighted just how unpredictable the NFL can be. What looked like a nightmare for the Steelers and the AFC North never fully materialized, but the drama revealed tensions, rivalries, and the high stakes behind every trade. Fans and analysts were left questioning Baltimore’s motives, while Crosby showed professionalism and loyalty by keeping his focus on football and the people he cares about.

Steelers' Cameron and Connor Heyward share an emotional moment during a regular season game in Atlanta.
For Heyward, the situation brought some relief and clarity. Seeing Crosby stay with the Raiders meant his brother Connor would have a familiar presence to lean on, and Pittsburgh fans could breathe easier knowing their longtime rival did not land one of the league’s premier pass rushers. The saga may be over for now, but it will be remembered as one of the more unusual and talked-about trade stories in recent NFL history.
