The Pittsburgh Steelers enter a new era after their head coach of last season, Mike Tomlin, decided to step down from the job. The team hired former Green Bay Packers and Dallas Cowboys head coach, Mike McCarthy. McCarthy comes from the area and brings a Super Bowl ring along with him, which he earned by beating the Steelers in Super Bowl  XLV. McCarthy last head-coached in Dallas, where he spent five seasons. In those five seasons, he was able to accrue three straight 12-5 records before being fired after the 2024 season.

McCarthy is an offensive-minded coach, which the Steelers haven't really had at the helm in decades. This comes after years of an offense that relied on a lot of field goals and for their defense to win them games. The Steelers have loaded up on weapons after the addition of McCarthy, and have taken a more aggressive approach to the offseason than they have in previous years. McCarthy will have the chance to utilize new receiver Michael Pittman Jrand running back Rico Dowdle within his offense, along with the Steelers' existing weapons.

McCarthy will bring a new scheme to Pittsburgh and new strategies for game preparation. Cowboys legend Sean Lee, who played under McCarthy in Dallas, offered his praise recently on The Christian Kuntz Podcast

"He's got the incredible offensive background of being a play-caller, and then he's got this ability to adapt his practices," said Lee. "He's an unbelievable person, a great guy. A true football guy. So, you're going to get the combination of this Pittsburgh old school toughness, along with his offensive innovation."

Lee's praise, especially as a former defensive player, proves McCarthy is extremely effective on the offensive side of the ball. McCarthy will be calling the plays for Pittsburgh and his innovation will be something that the team has been looking for.

McCarthy has the opportunity to reinvigorate the Steelers' offensive play-calling while bringing the Steelers' toughness that the franchise is known for. So far, the roster has been designed with that notion in mind. The aforementioned players bring the toughness that McCarthy is looking for in his offense. Dowdle is a big, downhill runner, and Pittman is a big-bodied receiving threat who will beat opposing corners with short and intermediate routes.

The Steelers have the vision of getting back to tough, Steeler football, while also changing with the times. The offense under Tomlin the last few years was stagnant, run-heavy, and didn't score a lot of points. While it won games, Pittsburgh relied on its stout defense far too often. This year, the hopes for the team are to be more efficient and put up more points. The free agent additions give a clue as to where the Steelers are trying to go with their offense. The organization is rallying behind McCarthy in hopes of remaining competitive while still driving the team in a progressive direction.

Steelers Can Go Back To Their Brand Of Football

The Steelers are known for playing smash-mouth football, winning in the trenches, and running the ball down opponents' throats. Pittsburgh has two running backs who are known to be bruisers and have made upgrades on the offensive and defensive lines over the years in the NFL Draft. The Black and Gold will use that to their advantage, while remaining innovative, as Lee mentioned.

Pittsburgh will have to go back to being a dominant force in the trenches. Coming off a AFC North division title for the Steelers in 2025, McCarthy will hope to become repeat champs by playing his brand of football. It won't be surprising to see the former Greenfield native utilizing his team's physical prowess and going back to what made Steeler football, but with a 2026 twist. This might include RPOs and zone reads, but with the grit of old school football.
