The Pittsburgh Steelers made an exciting trade to send Minkah Fitzpatrick to the Miami Dolphins ahead of the 2025 season. In return, Pittsburgh got back tight end Jonnu Smith and the even more exciting defensive back Jalen Ramsey. Many pundits were curious how the Steelers would deploy Ramsey in their defense. He started the season primarily as an outside cornerback, was deployed a bit in the slot, but truly made his presence felt when he moved to safety.

With the Steelers making some exciting moves in their secondary in free agency, many are curious what role Ramsey will have in 2026. The Steelers’ secondary is strong with Joey Porter Jr., Asante Samuel, Ramsey, Jamel Dean, Jaquan Brisker, and Darnell Savage. That is a lot of talent and depth to work with, and it makes Ramsey’s role even more critical in the 2026 season. Steelers insider Ray Fittipaldo joined 93.7 The Fan to reveal what he believes Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham will use Ramsey for and in what way.

According to Fittipaldo, the expectation is that Ramsey’s versatility will remain a central part of the Steelers’ defensive plans. Rather than locking him into a single position, Pittsburgh is likely to continue moving him around the formation to create mismatches and disguise coverages. His experience as both a boundary cornerback and a safety gives the coaching staff flexibility to adjust depending on opponent personnel and in-game situations, which is a major asset in today’s pass-heavy NFL.
"I think they view Jalen Ramsey as kind of a positionless player who's gonna line up in a different spot, play to play, game to game, week to week," Fittipaldo said. "I just don't think he's gonna be locked into safety, slot corner. His days as an outside corner are probably over."
Looking ahead to 2026, the Steelers may lean even more into hybrid looks in the secondary, especially with their recent additions in free agency. Ramsey’s ability to communicate, read offenses, and support both the run and pass game makes him a strong candidate to serve as a matchup chess piece.

Whether lining up in the slot, rotating deep as a safety, or stepping up near the line of scrimmage, his role will likely be defined by adaptability, allowing Pittsburgh to maximize the overall strength and depth of its defensive unit.
"I think they're gonna move him around, and if they're facing a big-time pass-catching tight end one week, he might be the guy who matches up on that guy in the slot," Fittipaldo said. "If it's a different kind of matchup, maybe he's back in deep center field."
As the Steelers head into the 2026 season, all eyes will be on how their defensive backfield comes together and how effectively the coaching staff can maximize its versatility. With so many experienced and athletic players in the mix, Pittsburgh has the ability to mix and match alignments in ways that keep opposing offenses off balance.
Steelers Lucky To Have Jalen Ramsey's Presence In 2026
Ramsey’s presence stands out as a defining factor in that equation. His ability to play multiple roles allows the Steelers to disguise coverages, adjust on the fly, and deploy creative packages that suit specific matchups. That kind of flexibility can elevate the entire unit when used correctly.

Ultimately, the success of the secondary will come down to cohesion, communication, and how well each piece fits within the larger scheme. If the Steelers can fully capitalize on their depth and versatility, Ramsey could once again serve as the key piece that ties everything together, helping to anchor one of the more dynamic defenses in the league.
