The Pittsburgh Steelers have once again left fans and analysts digging for answers after their latest draft decision. The team selected Max Iheanachor 21st overall in a move that immediately raised eyebrows across the league. While the pick may look straightforward on the surface, there is growing belief that there is more going on behind the scenes than the team is letting on.

However, after further research it turns out that many draft pundits believe this pick was pretty solid for Khan and the Steelers front office. Steeler Nation got even more insight to that truth when The Pat McAfee Show was rolling live from the Steel City on Friday ahead of Day 2 of the 2026 NFL Draft. Tone Digz shared what they had been told about the Steelers' decision and why it is a good pick and not a mistake.
Around league circles, the reaction has not been as negative as the initial social media wave suggested. Several analysts have pointed out that Iheanachor brings traits that do not always show up in highlight reels but matter heavily at the next level, including size, versatility, and the ability to develop within a structured system. Digz ensured the fan base that the Steelers are super excited about this pick.
"A lot of the yinzers are really p**sed and saying Omar Khan didnโt know what he was doing there," Tone Digz said while speaking on The Pat McAfee Show on Friday morning. "I can tell you and I can promise you from maybe being around that building that the Pittsburgh Steelers loved Max Iheanachor."
The belief is that Pittsburgh is not just drafting for immediate impact, but instead betting on long term refinement under their new coaching staff that Mike McCarthy has brought to town. That approach has often defined how the Steelers build their roster, even when it confuses outside observers on draft night.

On The Pat McAfee Show broadcast from Pittsburgh, Digz added more clarity to that thinking, explaining that teams were higher on Iheanachor than most fans realized and that the Steelers felt they were getting value at a position they prioritized internally.
"It was brought up to us a few times whether they were going to take him or not," Digz said. "I promise you he was not a backup player. They are very happy to have him."
The explanation centered around fit and development rather than instant headlines, which lines up with how Pittsburgh has operated in recent drafts under Khan. While the reaction around the league may continue to be mixed in the short term, the organization appears confident that this is a selection that will make more sense once training camp and the season unfold.
Steelers' Omar Khan Plotting A Massive Day 2
With 11 picks left in the draft and four of them still coming in Rounds 2 and 3, the Steelers are in a rare position to seriously elevate this roster. To do that, they will need to hit on several of these selections. The second day of this draft is where Khan and McCarthy can truly separate themselves and make some noise. Many are expecting exactly that, and it certainly could end up being the case.

Everything now shifts to execution on Day 2, where value picks can reshape the direction of the roster rather quickly. If the Steelers stay disciplined and continue targeting impact talent, this class has the potential to be remembered as a turning point. The foundation is set, now it comes down to results. It also comes down to Khan and McCarthy hitting some home run draft picks on Friday.
