The Pittsburgh Steelers got some exciting news on Thursday regarding quarterback Aaron Rodgers. It appears as if the veteran is set to report to the team's facility to presumably negotiate a contract for the 2026 campaign. After a tumultuous offseason, everything seems to finally be coming together for the franchise. That doesn't mean that curveballs can't be thrown, which is why it is important to keep up with the rest of the NFL. Several months remain until meaningful football will be played, but organizations across the league are doing what they can to put themselves in more competitive positions.

One of the more interesting developments outside of the Steel City that took place was with the Minnesota Vikings firing their general manager Kwesi Adofo-Mensah after signing him to an extension in 2025. Not only did this shock a lot of people, but the team then decided to hold off on hiring a new head of the front office until after the 2026 NFL Draft.
As each year passes, the consistent belief in Pittsburgh has been that assistant general manager Andy Weidl is getting closer to earning his own role as the top man somewhere else. He came to the Steelers shortly after Omar Khan was promoted back in May of 2022, and is viewed as one of the better talent evaluators in the league. At some point, he is going to be pried away from Pennsylvania.
NFL insider Albert Breer gave an update on the Vikings' quest for a new general manager on Thursday, and a lot of the candidates seem to have a lot of scouting experience. Shockingly, Weidl has not yet been requested to interview.

• 49ers assistant GM RJ Gillen
• Bills assistant GM Terrance Gray
• Rams assistant GM John McKay
• Seahawks assistant GM Nolan Teasley
• Titans assistant GM Dave Ziegler
All come from scouting side.
There's no definitive knowledge of Minnesota's search stopping at these individuals, but it sure seems like not many more will be added. This is great news in Pittsburgh because even if Weidl is hired elsewhere in 2027, he will have been with the Steelers for the entirety of the 2026 college football season. A lot of the notes on players for the draft will have input from Weidl.

Steelers' assistant general manager Andy Weidl speaks to the media during one of his first press conferences as a member of the organization after coming over from the Philadelphia Eagles.
Khan and Weidl have had some successful drafts together. Most notably, their first as a duo came in 2023 and now many of those players are expected to receive lucrative extensions at some point within the next 12 months or so. Pittsburgh will have a big void to fill when and if Weidl departs for another franchise. Khan is known as the cap guru and financial expert, while Weidl gets a lot of credit on the personnel side.
Hiring well means that eventually your best executives will be moving on to higher roles. It won't get much better for the Steelers' assistant general manager; however, he should be the head of a front office at some point in the next couple of years. Pittsburgh will hold onto him as long as it can, and the Vikings apparently not having any interest is a positive for Khan and Art Rooney II.

Steelers Have An Odd Option To Retain Weidl If Absolutely Necessary
Pittsburgh has its owner in Rooney and general manager in Khan. However, if the organization wanted to get extremely creative, Khan could technically receive a promotion to a new position such as the head of football operations. At this point, Weidl could then get the nod to be the general manager.
It's not likely to occur, but it's possible. The Steelers don't have much time to make that kind of decision, though, as the calls will continue to come into Weidl each offseason — just not from the Vikings apparently.
