Steelers' Hall Of Fame RB Jerome Bettis Provides Bold Warning To Aaron Rodgers

Another Pittsburgh Steelers quarterback saga is in the sports news cycle with Aaron Rodgers continuing to delay his commitment to the franchise for the second straight year. After the team won the AFC North in 2025, many believed that the veteran would be on his way out, especially after the surprising resignation of Mike Tomlin. Now, with Mike McCarthy running the show, there is a lot of hope that the four-time MVP will agree to play in the Steel City for one more season. However, no contract has been signed and the fan base is beginning to get extremely frustrated.

Rodgers undoubtedly gives the Steelers the best chance to make the playoffs again in 2026. Both Will Howard and Drew Allar are mysteries because neither has taken a professional snap just yet. If the veteran did decide to retire and not return, some in Pittsburgh may actually be fine with one, or both, of the two younger signal-callers getting a chance. The team would either find the future, or be bad enough to secure top draft capital in 2027.

A lot of media members and former players have been weighing in on the Rodgers situation. It's pretty much all anyone wants to talk about in regard to the Steelers with Organized Team Activities (OTAs) beginning very soon. That's exactly what Hall of Fame running back and Pittsburgh legend Jerome Bettis did when he made an appearance on the Yahoo Sports Daily Show.

The retired ball carrier went into detail about what he thinks the team should do moving forward. While he believes Rodgers needs to be around for the organization to win in 2026, he wouldn't be shy about benching one of the best quarterbacks of all time.

"I've got to give them the best chance to win now. Aaron Rodgers provides that," Bettis said. "I am going to keep my eye on the future and have some young guys in the queue ready to go at the quarterback position and give them the opportunity; and, if the Aaron Rodgers experiment does not work then, midseason, we've got to go in a different direction. If we're not in playoff position by midseason, we have to pull the plug on this plan."

With the ego that Rodgers has always seemed to have had, this would be a bold and relationship-altering move if it was ever made by McCarthy. Bettis is not on the coaching staff, but was not holding back and believes that the quarterback should absolutely have a short leash. However, it would evidently be really difficult to sit him on the bench.

"Who wants to sit Aaron Rodgers? That's the tough part," Bettis stated.

Howard and Allar certainly deserve a chance to prove themselves; however, those opportunities are likely only to come in the preseason if Rodgers is around. Bettis does make an interesting point, though. What would be the point of playing Rodgers if the team was eliminated from playoff contention?

The Steelers have essentially done this to themselves. Most teams throughout the NFL have a long-term plan in place at the quarterback position. Unfortunately, that hasn't been the case of late in the Steel City.

Now, another year of Rodgers would simply be delaying the inevitable. The 2027 draft class is expected to be relatively stout, but how does the franchise go out and take a signal-caller in the first round without seeing Howard and/or Allar first? The situation is rather tricky, so it would be fascinating to see a Rodgers-led team falter. It would put an impossible decision in McCarthy's hands.

Steelers Benching Rodgers Remains Extremely Unlikely

While Pittsburgh has young quarterbacks who need to be evaluated, there is a very slim chance of Bettis' warning and comments ever coming to fruition. It could make sense in the moment, but also would potentially shatter a relationship between the veteran and McCarthy, as well as the future Hall of Famer and the Steelers moving forward.
