Steelers Notice "Eye-Opening" Culture Shift Under Mike McCarthy Compared To Mike Tomlin Era

The Pittsburgh Steelers' fan base has been fed up with the lack of playoff success over the last decade and counting. The Steelers’ last playoff win came in the 2016 season, and now they head into the 2026 season with a new leader in Mike McCarthy. Mike Tomlin elected to walk away after the 2025 season and decided he didn’t have what it takes anymore to end this playoff drought. Tomlin gave it everything he had, but he felt it was in the best interest of the franchise to pass the torch to someone else to try and solve the playoff drought.

Obviously, a lot is going to be different with McCarthy. He spent 13 seasons coaching the Green Bay Packers and five coaching the Dallas Cowboys, and his 19th season will be with the Steelers. Pittsburgh is actually in an interesting spot with Aaron Rodgers, Cam Heyward, and TJ Watt, as well as some other veterans and an influx of young talent. With McCarthy in the Steel City to attempt to change things and a new staff, there is optimism they can finally end the postseason drought.

One thing has stood out quickly to Steelers insider Mark Kaboly. During organized team activities, Kaboly highlighted that McCarthy isn’t messing around while speaking on his Kaboly + Mack show on Thursday morning. He revealed it has been eye-opening seeing the differences between how Tomlin ran things compared to McCarthy. The jury remains out, though, on whether that will translate to wins.

"This is 18, 19, 20 years in the making of how he goes on about his business right here," Kaboly said while speaking on McCarthy’s program. "It is kind of eye-opening, but does it translate to wins? Well, I don’t know, we will have to see that, but it’s definitely a lot different from the schedules to when they are practicing, when they are practicing at training camp, when they are going to training camp, what time they are heading on the field, who’s allowed to be in the cafeteria at certain times."

It’s no secret that Tomlin never had a losing season in his 19 seasons as head coach. While that was an incredible accomplishment, it doesn’t erase the fact that his playoff record over the last decade failed to generate a single win.

Kaboly isn’t sure if that will translate to wins, but he is confident that the program McCarthy is running is top-notch.

"It’s all very, very structured," Kaboly said. "If you were worried about Tomlin being that guy who was lackadaisical with his plans or how he goes about his business with the team, at least in how he’s structuring things, this is not the case whatsoever. At least, not so far. I know it’s been a week and it’s early, but it’s definitely different."

The Steelers enter a new era with McCarthy at the helm, hoping a refreshed structure can finally push them past their playoff struggles. After years of consistency but limited postseason success, the pressure to deliver has never been higher.

Steelers Get Positive Early Signs From OTAs

Early signs from OTAs suggest a more detailed and structured approach under McCarthy’s leadership. Insiders like Kaboly have already noted clear differences in how the program is being run compared to previous years.

Now it comes down to results. With a veteran core and emerging young talent, Pittsburgh believes the pieces are in place, but the real test will be whether this new direction can finally translate into playoff wins.
