Steelers Linked To Veteran All-Pro Wide Receivers In Free Agency

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been very active in the 2026 offseason. They have added depth to nearly every single position, and there is not just one glaring hole on the roster as the offseason process continues on. However, that doesn't mean Pittsburgh is done adding either. There is no such thing as too much depth, and Pittsburgh knows that. It would not be surprising to see a couple more players get signed soon, whether it's a splash move to raise the ceiling or a minor just-in-case signing to keep building on the team depth.

Steelers General Manager Omar Khan holds up a phone to his ear as he stands in the team's War Room during the 2025 NFL Draft.

In fact, some people believe the Steelers don't have enough depth yet. In his latest article on Bleacher Report, Kristopher Knox mentioned a move that Pittsburgh should go ahead and make to truly round out the offense.

"The Pittsburgh Steelers finally re-signed Aaron Rodgers, and the quarterback has admitted that this will be his final NFL season," Knox said. "If Pittsburgh hopes to make Rodgers' last ride a memorable one, it should add a little more to its receiving corps. DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr. should make a solid receiver duo. However, rookies Germie Bernard and Kaden Wetjen are unproven, and Pittsburgh's overall receiver depth is lacking. Adding a vet like Hopkins or Stefon Diggs would help give the Steelers a playoff-caliber offense."

The Steelers have made some moves at the receiver position, but outside of Michael Pittman Jr., the men they brought in aren't proven. In fact, fourth-round pick Kaden Wetjen was drafted to be a return man, as opposed to wide receiver. The odds of him seeing significant playing time on offense are slim to none, so it's really like there are only five wideouts expected to make the 53-man roster at this point.

Free agent receiver Stefon Diggs had a nice little revival, as he was Drake Maye's favorite target throughout the New England Patriots' 2025 Super Bowl run, in which they fell short in the big game. Diggs had over 1,000 yards receiving during the regular season while proving to the world that his Achilles is just fine. At this point, it wouldn't hurt to take a flyer on him, especially since his value is depressed for quite a few reasons.

The Patriots released Diggs after the 2025 season, and a large part of that seems to be about the assault claims he was facing. However, he was found not guilty in a court of law, so he does not have to worry about that being a distraction. Some fans may still be concerned about how he ran himself out of both Minnesota and Buffalo due to allegedly not getting the ball enough, but with him still being a free agent, he should know that he won't be a top target anywhere.

Steelers Might Have Great Situation For Young Receivers

In previous years, the Steelers have not enjoyed the idea of having rookies start early, although it's unclear if the new coaching staff feels the same. If it does, then it could bring Diggs in to play while helping to mentor Wetjen and Germie Bernard. It would likely be just a one-year deal for the recent AFC Champion, so Bernard would be able to take over the role of full-time starting WR3 in 2027 and keep moving up the depth chart.

Steelers Germie Bernard

Steelers rookie wide receiver Germie Bernard works on drills during 2026 team rookie minicamp.

On top of that, quarterback Aaron Rodgers seems to have a very hard time trusting receivers on rookie contract, so 2026 could be more harmful to Bernard's development and confidence than helpful. Bringing Diggs in would not only help the offense, but it would almost protect the second-round pick from getting chewed out on a regular basis by the 42-year-old while he develops a connection with Will Howard in the second-team offense.
