Steelers' Mike McCarthy Is Already Enraged At Assistant Coach: "I Don't Know What The H*ll [He's] Doing"

The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the process of gelling together and getting on the same page as the offseason program progresses. They recently completed Week 2 of Organized Team Activities (OTAs), but with many more weeks of practice to go before the long summer break. They need to take advantage of every last bit of time they have if they want to have sustained success throughout 2026. The offensive system is very particular, so everyone has to learn it quickly, while the defensive system is more about the players working to fit in the same scheme.

This is not just a time for the players to improve and gel together, however. The coaching staff needs to learn and fit in as well. Head Coach Mike McCarthy made his staff mostly out of people he worked with in the past, but times have changed since he last had a chance to interact with many of these people. Meanwhile, there are a few unfamiliar faces that are looking to prove themselves as competent coaches to him.

One of them is already in trouble, however. During his post-practice press conference, McCarthy was asked about something that his assistant coach said the previous day. He explained the situation, but he then took a moment to call him out for giving out important information.

"I don’t know what the h*ll Chin’s [Ramon Chinyoung's] doing giving that good information out so early," McCarthy said. "I’ll have to have a talk with him."

New Steelers running back coach Ramon Chinyoung previously said that McCarthy's goal is to have 55 total completions and touches combined on offense. If that happens, then he believes that's what it will take to win the contest. In a Steelers' offense that wants to pound the rock, this will likely lead to an average of 25 runs and 30 completions per game. That shouldn't be too hard of a goal to hit.

It's easy to see why this made McCarthy upset. Now, his opponents know exactly what his key is to victory, and they can use that information to gameplan against him. On the surface, it doesn't seem like a big deal, as teams clearly want as many chances to move the ball forward as possible. In a giant chess match like this, though, every little piece of information is a big deal.

At this point, Chinyoung might not have as many media opportunities moving forward, giving him less room to say what he wants after this mental lapse. Usually, it's easy to tell when McCarthy is joking around, and he did not sound pleased when he learned what the RBs coach said to the media. There were no signs of him playing around when he called his assistant coach out to the public.

Steelers Can't Afford To Have Many Public Blunders Like This

While the Steelers are enjoying the reunion between McCarthy and Aaron Rodgers, there will be a larger microscope placed on them and some more microphones added to their podiums whenever they talk. What people remember more than anything is them fighting in Green Bay before the head coach got fired. Many of them will be watching to see if that happens again

While Chinyoung is not directly related to the McCarthy/Rodgers relationship, this is still a bad look. Many media outlets would happily release the story of turmoil happening under the former Green Bay Packers' watches. For now, they should be fine, but one or two more slip-ups from anyone in the organization could end up leading to a big distraction that takes away from this supposed storybook ending.
