Steelers' Offensive Lineman Receives His Wish: "That's My Home"

The Pittsburgh Steelers have been doing all kinds of experimenting with their offensive line during Organized Team Activities (OTAs). It seems like the left side is set in stone for the 2026 season, but there are still plenty of moving parts going around to prepare for different scenarios that could pop up. As this is all happening, there are two rookies who are looking to develop and prove themselves as capable starters while working with the first-team offense. There is a ton of fluidity with this unit, and that is expected to be the case until September.

Steelers offensive linemen Troy Fautanu (76) and Mason McCormick (66) set up prior to the ball being snapped while the team works out during a 2025 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.

There is another lineman who has been getting a lot of work in his primary spot. During a post-practice interview, utility lineman Spencer Anderson revealed how he felt about his current spot.

"I feel more comfortable at right," Anderson said. "That's my home. When I first met the staff, I was asked if I had to pick [a position], because you know you're using a lot of the Y and jumbo stuff or whatever you want to call it. And I was like, well, I mean if I had a choice, I'd say right guard."

With the left side being set, Anderson has primarily been working at right guard during the early part of OTAs. He has moved around quite a bit, as his versatility has proven to be an asset. However, with Gennings Dunker just being a third-round rookie, it will take a lot for the utility man to lose the starting job, especially since it's the position that he feels the most comfortable with.

Offensive line coach James Campen has put a strong emphasis on versatility, and no one reflects that more than Anderson, as he has played all six positions on the line throughout his career, including swing tackle for Pittsburgh's overpowered jumbo set in 2025.

He will still likely move around to each position in some capacity during these practices, but odds are he will be the starting right guard in Week 1.

Steelers offensive linemen Spencer Anderson and Dylan Cook look to pass block during Pittsburgh's 29-24 win over the Detroit Lions in Week 16 of the 2025 NFL Regular Season.

After playing nearly every position in his Steelers career -- including left guard for the first time -- Anderson is getting rewarded for his hard work by getting the chance to start at his ideal spot on the line. He has performed well at every single spot that he has worked at so far, but the expectations are raised. He needs to step it up and prove how great he is since he got to pick his position.

Steelers May Not Be Able To Keep Anderson

Between him playing in his "home" as well as being in a contract year, it's safe to say that Anderson will play his heart out. That will most likely lead to teams lining up at his house with trucks full of money to get him on their roster. His value is borderline immeasurable. Every NFL team can find a way for him to be a key contributor for it, so there will be a ton of offers for him in 2027.

Steelers quarterback Aaron Rodgers (8) celebrates a big play with offensive lineman Spencer Anderson (74) during a regular season Thursday Night Football matchup against the Bengals in 2025.

The Steelers could use him as well, but they used significant draft capital on Dunker and Max Iheanachor. They may not play much in 2026, but they should become starters in 2027. The starting offensive line for then and beyond is practically set, and there will be plenty of teams that will give Anderson the chance to start, while 2026 will be his last chance in Pittsburgh.
