It's safe to say that the Pittsburgh Steelers organization may have been very surprised when Mike Tomlin announced his resignation from the team. He had been around since getting hired in 2007, and he delivered the city's sixth Super Bowl championship. While it is still very much in the air if he will coach again, plenty of stories have started to come out about his time running the locker room in the Steel City. The last decade or so of his tenure certainly wasn't something that made fans happy, as the franchise is currently going through a playoff win drought that began in 2017.

Known as the ultimate player's coach, it's going to take some getting used to in 2026 for the returning members of the roster who will not have Tomlin around to motivate them anymore. However, it's also good to get perspective from individuals who used to go to battle for the head coach at some point throughout his successful journey as the lead man.

Heath Miller had an incredible career with the Steelers and is beloved by the fan base. Not only does he have two Super Bowl rings, but he was a one-helmet guy that embodies everything that Pittsburgh is about. Often known as being soft-spoken and accepting his role at tight end for so many years, Miller sat down with SteelerNation recently in a one-on-one interview.

Tomlin stepping down had to be a very meaningful moment for a lot of former players. When asked about some of the things that not all fans may know about Tomlin, the retired tight end went in depth about the coach's style.

"I don't know if it's a secret, but, you know, he's such a high IQ football guy," Miller said. "It was amazing to me how much work he put in to studying opposing teams, offenses, defenses, and preparing his teams to win on Sundays; and he had an answer to every problem, and he's an amazing coach, but also, he's an amazing communicator. "

There is plenty of criticism that Tomlin had received because of recent playoff failures, but Miller's words speak to that audience to assure everyone in it that it wasn't for a lack of trying. He was consistently doing everything and anything he could to win football games. It isn't all that easy to lead a team for 19 years and consistently earn the respect of so many people.

"To be able to motivate a team of 50, 60 grown men, who are making a lot of money every year without your message getting stale, you got to be a special person and a special communicator to be able to do that," Miller stated.

Miller spent the majority of his career playing for Tomlin, and despite him retiring about a decade ago, he seems to remember everything like it was yesterday when it comes to his former head coach.

Things will continue to be a little weird in the Steel City for some time. Mike McCarthy is also a very respected leader of men, but that doesn't mean his style will be the same as Tomlin's. The hope is that continued success in the regular season will soon translate over to the postseason. However, Tomlin is certainly someone who is going to be missed.

Steelers Miss Having Miller On The Field

Tomlin isn't the only individual who doesn't get enough credit sometimes. Pittsburgh has a very reliable tight end in Pat Freiermuth; however, Miller is someone that was incredibly underrated. He was a great in the red zone, and not afraid to do the dirty work when blocking for whoever he needed to.

The compliments that Miller gave to Tomlin weren't just said because he felt like he had to say nice things. They were a genuine reminder of just how great the Steelers had it for nearly 20 seasons.
