The Pittsburgh Steelers entered the summer with an intriguing quarterback room. Of course, future Hall of Famer Aaron Rodgers headlines the group and will be the Week 1 starter in his last season as a player. He has the task of not only leading the Steelers back to the playoffs, but help develop a young duo of quarterbacks that include Will Howard and Drew Allar. Along with Mason Rudolph in the locker room, there isn't a clear backup and that is an ongoing battle in Pittsburgh.

Allar, the Steelers' third-round draft pick, has taken in a lot of knowledge from Rodgers thus far. There's a lot of upside with Allar as he comes with a great frame and a lot of talent. He didn't put it all together at Penn State, but newly hired head coach Mike McCarthy is one of the premier coaches in developing quarterbacks, so Pittsburgh was willing to take the gamble on the raw Nittany Lion. The Steelers have tried many different things with Allar through the early part of summer, especially in an attempt to fix up his footwork. There are just a handful of little things that have held him back through the early stages of his career, but once he gets past that, the Steelers feel like they have a possible franchise quarterback.
Obviously, it will take time for Allar to live up to the hype, but with McCarthy's track history, this organization wants to see how it may turn out. With the arm he has and his size, there's so much room for him to grow into a quality NFL quarterback. The raw, physical metrics are all there, it's just time and reps that will put it all together under McCarthy.
On top of that, Allar has a quality that is extremely valuable. He is completely willing to learn, rather than coming in thinking he is fully going to take over this team. He's accepted his flaws and understands that he needs to work hard in order to succeed at this level. His willingness to listen to McCarthy and Rodgers will hopefully help him in the long run. Before we jump to conclusions about his future, it's nice to acknowledge what Pittsburgh actually has in front of them. Steelers Insider Jim Wexell talked about his strong quality of being coachable on his podcast today, which is something you can't teach a player.
"He's very coachable, maybe too nice," Jim Wexell described on his podcast. "We could talk about the rookies and their personalities. I've talked to all of them after, but I think it's more important right now that we figure out the quarterback situation. I mean, injuries happen, and I keep pleading with people to watch the process unfold."
The Allar development will be a fun story to follow for the next few years, especially if he's bought in to what McCarthy preaches. After all, he helped mold Rodgers into who he is today, along with Dak Prescott and Brett Favre. His resume is very deep and it might pay dividends to the Steelers down the road.

It will take time for Allar to really adjust to the NFL, and considering Rodgers will be done after this season, Pittsburgh may need another bridge quarterback before it'd really be time for Allar, if he does win the job. Some speculation has involved Baker Mayfield, which would be a very expensive guy to add, but if that ends up being their choice, it would give Allar a lot longer to develop.
Steelers Will Have To Let Things Play Out With Allar
It would be great to see Allar turn into the next best quarterback in Pittsburgh, but there are some doubts.

Maybe McCarthy can find a way to turn Allar into a star and this report about his coachable personality will definitely help. Time will tell what's next for the young quarterback.
