The Pittsburgh Steelers are entering the 2026 season with a brand new offensive identity, and new offensive coordinator Brian Angelichio is wasting no time making his vision clear. In a video posted Monday on the official team YouTube channel, Angelichio sat down for an interview and gave fans their most detailed look yet at what the offense will look like under new head coach Mike McCarthy.

Angelichio, who spent the last four seasons as passing game coordinator and tight ends coach with the Minnesota Vikings, was hired by McCarthy in February to run the offense in Pittsburgh. The two have a long history together, having previously worked side by side with the Green Bay Packers, and that familiarity has clearly translated quickly into the building. As Angelichio described the process of reuniting with McCarthy and other familiar faces on the new staff, it was evident that the foundation of this offense is already being built on a shared language and a mutual understanding of what it takes to win.

The centerpiece of Angelichio's vision is the West Coast offense, a system that McCarthy used during his most successful periods as a head coach in Green Bay. When asked about the offensive identity they are creating in Pittsburgh, Angelichio was direct in the interview posted on the Steelers' official YouTube channel:

"We're going to take core principles of the West Coast offense that have been very successful through a lot of years during coach McCarthy's time. And it'll all start with the quarterback," Angelichio explained.

The Steelers' culture of building around their quarterback is nothing new, but the way Angelichio described it makes it clear that this offense will be tailored specifically to what Aaron Rodgers does best.

Angelichio explained that the entire offense will be designed to run through the quarterback and make him successful, adding that if a quarterback is not comfortable with a play, that play simply will not make the game plan because a quarterback who lacks confidence in a call is unlikely to execute it effectively.

Steelers' New Offense Will Be Built Around Aaron Rodgers

For a 42-year-old Rodgers entering what he has said will be his final NFL season, that kind of offensive philosophy could not be more important. Rodgers thrived in the West Coast system during his years with McCarthy in Green Bay, winning a Super Bowl and four MVP Awards during that stretch. Now with the two reunited in Pittsburgh, the expectation is that Angelichio's system will allow Rodgers to play within his comfort zone while maximizing the weapons around him. Those weapons include wide receivers DK Metcalf and Michael Pittman Jr., as well as a talented tight end room headlined by Pat Freiermuth and Darnell Washington. As SteelerNation previously covered, the new offensive scheme needs to unlock everything Rodgers still has left heading into what could be his final season in the NFL.

The pieces are clearly in place for the Steelers to field one of the more dynamic offenses McCarthy has been associated with in years. With Angelichio handling the details and McCarthy calling the plays, Pittsburgh has a clear structure in place and a shared vision that starts and ends with putting Rodgers in the best possible position to succeed. Whether that translates to playoff success in 2026 remains to be seen, but the early returns from the new offensive staff are encouraging. The Steelers have not won a playoff game since 2017, and the pressure to finally get over that hump has never been greater.

With Rodgers in the final chapter of his Hall of Fame career and McCarthy back calling plays for the first time since his days in Green Bay, this feels like one of the more compelling offensive stories in the entire NFL heading into the new season.
