Steelers' Past Shows Why Organization Likely Has Zero Interest In Star QB Brendan Sorsby

The Pittsburgh Steelers are going to be one of the more fascinating teams to follow throughout training camp and heading into the 2026 regular season. The franchise and General Manager Omar Khan are trying to balance an attempt at being a legitimate contender in 2026, while also developing key positions on the team for the future. One of those areas of focus is of course the quarterback position. Aaron Rodgers arguably gives the team the best chance to win now, while Head Coach Mike McCarthy is focusing on building up both Will Howard and Drew Allar to potentially be the starting quarterback in Pittsburgh during the 2027 season.

Ideally, Howard and Allar will fight it out for the starting job going into the 2027 season, and whoever wins that battle will become Pittsburgh's next franchise quarterback. That might be wishful thinking, however. There is no guarantee that either player will pan out, so taking as many shots at the position as possible may be a good strategy. Pittsburgh will be in the running to draft a quarterback in the first round of the 2027 NFL Draft, and the organization is also currently one of the teams that is thought to be a good match with Brendan Sorsby, who has applied to enter the league's Supplemental Draft.

Gambling allegations came out against Sorsby during the 2026 offseason before he was supposed to partake in his first season at Texas Tech. He is deciding to go to the league instead, and with the Steelers being one of the quarterback-needy teams, he has been connected to Pittsburgh. Insider Mike DeFabo joined 102.5 WDVE on Thursday morning, and he shared why he believes the Steelers would have no interest.

"That's really the main component to this entire conversation; how would they feel about this whole gambling thing? Would that be a bridge that they would be willing to cross?" DeFabo asked. "I don't know the answer to that right now as we sit here. There was a situation a year ago, Hunter Dekkers, who was a quarterback, placed a $15 bet on Iowa State to win a game, ultimately got disqualified from major college football. He was coming out of the draft a year ago. At that point, everyone in the Steelers organization I talked to was basically like, 'We are not going to touch this guy. Not interested. Not taking that risk.' I basically assume the Steelers would take the same stance."

Hunter Dekkers is a current quarterback on the New Orleans Saints roster that oddly enough played for the Houston Gamblers of the UFL during the 2026 season. He played college football at Iowa State and eventually got in trouble for underage gambling, and it was revealed he bet on several Iowa State sporting events, including football games while he was the team's backup. He went on to finish his college career at a community college.

Dekkers entered the 2025 NFL Draft and he wound up going undrafted, and DeFabo confirmed that the Steelers had zero interest in him due to his past and his problems with gambling. The same logic and reasoning should follow with Sorsby. However, Sorsby is a much better player. There was talk about the quarterback being a first-round pick in the 2027 NFL Draft, which could make some teams in the league look past the gambling allegations.

Steelers Are Already Dealing With A Conundrum At Quarterback

Pittsburgh is already going to have a hard time deciding on the quarterbacks that will make the final roster. There is a chance that the franchise keeps four, which would be a bit uncharacteristic. Adding a fifth quarterback like Sorsby into the mix would just make things a little bit more difficult. The organization would probably have to give up at least a third-round pick to land Sorsby, so he would have to make the roster.
