The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2026 offseason has seen the team undergo a large amount of changes. Among those changes are new defensive coordinator Patrick Graham who joins the staff of Head Coach Mike McCarthy, as they both get ready to take on their first year in the Steel City. On top of the sweeping changes in the coaching staff, the team also brought in a lot of new players. As the team looks to improve on both sides of the football, one player has added even more motivation for 2026.

As the two coaches have now gotten to work together in rookie minicamp, as well as Organized Team Activities, next up, they'll be doing so at training camp in late July. While Pittsburgh struggled particularly on offense in the 2025 season, especially in total offense as they ranked 25th overall in the NFL, they did make moves to improve on defense this offseason as well. One of those possible improvements is someone who will enjoy a homecoming in the 2026 season.

The organization signed safety Jaquan Brisker to a one-year, $5.5 million contract during free agency. In a recent episode of Steelers Collective, team insider Mark Kaboly name dropped the former Chicago Bears safety as someone he sees being extraordinarily motivated for the 2026 season. The new Black and Gold defensive back also spent his college days with Penn State, not too far from the Pittsburgh area.

"I think [Jaquan Brisker is] just so valuable in what he’s going to be able to do," Kaboly said. "He’s motivated. He’s only making five million bucks, he probably thinks he got pretty much screwed out of some cash. So he has to take that one-year 'prove-it' deal, coming home, playing in front of his hometown fans, to prove that he is one of those upper echelon safeties."

The former Chicago standout joins the team after spending his first four NFL seasons in the Windy City. Brisker is known for his physicality and versatility, and has also had one interception in each of his first four NFL seasons.

Former Bears safety Jaquan Brisker stands on the playing surface as he gets ready for the ball to be snapped during a professional football game at Soldier Field in Chicago, IL.

He also does a great job at cleaning things up in the secondary, even just looking at his numbers last year. In 2025, he had 93 combined tackles as well as 52 solo, and added one tackle for loss with the Bears.

Steelers Can Benefit From Brisker's Versatility In 2026

While it may be true that Brisker was underpaid as Kaboly mentioned, this can only play well into the hands of Graham and company for the 2026 season. While he is known for being versatile and hard-hitting, he is also no stranger to being overlooked in his football career. Before heading to Penn State, he played at a junior college and had to make a name for himself before becoming a centerpiece of their secondary.

While the Pittsburgh secondary had several communication breakdowns in 2025 that led to big plays and could use his help there in 2026, his versatility extends into the running game. This makes him a bit of a Swiss Army knife-type of player, that Graham surely will not hesitate to use in his arsenal. Graham was able to lead the Las Vegas Raiders defense to a big turnaround in 2023, as they finished ninth in scoring defense. Now he has more resources and definitely more talent to work with in the Steel City.

Brisker also played his high school football at Gateway, just a little bit over 30 minutes east of Pittsburgh. While he may be playing with a chip on his shoulder, it is no doubt he will have the hometown support in 2026. For a guy that has been a great leader in the secondary before, the motivation to earn a massive payday may really bolster him to the upper echelon of NFL safeties.
