The Pittsburgh Steelers have always valued defense and have prioritized their best players on that side of the ball. They are a firm believer in defense winning championships. Over the years, Pittsburgh has consistently had some of the best defenses in the game and even some of the best in NFL history. It is in the Steelers' DNA to beat you up in the trenches and outwork you over the course of the game. That has always been their identity and Pittsburgh hopes to continue that going forward.

Joey Porter Jr. is the next big star for Pittsburgh. The defensive back out of Penn State has shown immense strides over the last several years. He has quickly turned into a premier defensive back in the AFC North and one of the top in the AFC overall. He is also the son of former Pittsburgh defender and coach Joey Porter Sr. Many people seem to think that in and of itself should cement himself in Pittsburgh for a long time.
Porter Jr. has earned his way into extension talks through his recent play, but it seems he and the Pittsburgh front office are not exactly seeing eye to eye on what both sides want. Although Porter Jr. has been among the league's elite, he still has a little way to go. Look at the likes of Patrick Surtain or Derek Stingley, who have solidified themselves as top NFL defenders and have earned their extensions. That is not to take away from Porter Jr., but it is to put it more into perspective on what his contract extension can and will look like.
Long-time Pittsburgh defender James Harrison recently spoke on Porter Jr.'s extension on his podcast, Deebo & Joe.
"One of the biggest reasons Porter Jr. can't get the number he wants is because he doesn't have the accolades of the guys who reset the corner market," Harrison explained.
Pittsburgh's reasoning is likely similar to what Harrison said, and they want to give Porter Jr. a little less than the level of money that the top corners in the NFL get. Pittsburgh still very much values the young cornerback and is still looking to extend him in the near future. It is more likely that Porter Jr. and his agent will have to come down to Pittsburgh's desired number that they have in mind, rather than his number being the deal that both sides agree on.

The future of Pittsburgh is still very much in Porter Jr.'s favor and if the deal gets done before the regular season starts this upcoming season, then there is perhaps potential for him to receive incentives.
Steelers Are Hopeful For Porter Jr.'s Elite Play To Continue
Pittsburgh's secondary has received a massive boost since drafting Porter Jr. with the 32nd overall pick in 2023. He has been in charge of following around opposing teams' No. 1 option on offense most games. This type of play by Porter Jr. causes a ripple effect on the defense and puts opposing offenses in situations they aren't always faced with when their No. 1 option is covered. The young star corner did not allow a single touchdown to guys he was covering last season and he was Pittsburgh's best shutdown guy last year.

If Porter Jr. wants to prove why he is worth the extension, his elite play from this past season must continue. Pittsburgh very much believes in him and thinks he is very capable of becoming the best defensive back in the NFL. The Steelers still want to see more of the same production however, and even to step up a level and match what the very most elite defensive backs are doing.
Porter Jr. is a budding star, and his future is very bright in Pittsburgh. Both sides hope that this upcoming season brings more of the same success.
