The Pittsburgh Steelers have spent the entire offseason debating whether hiring Mike McCarthy was truly a different direction for this franchise, or just more of the same wrapped in a different package. And now one of the most respected former Steelers players of all-time just made the most sensational case yet for why those two coaches are nothing alike, and what that means for Pittsburgh heading into 2026.

Former Steelers linebacker James Harrison sat down on the Deebo and Joe podcast and was asked about McCarthy's chances of winning Coach of the Year in his first season with Pittsburgh. What Harrison said next is going to resonate with every Steelers fan who spent years watching this team plateau under Mike Tomlin and wondering if anything was ever going to change. Harrison did not mince words. He drew a clear and direct line between the two coaches that cuts right to the heart of what this franchise needed and what it is finally getting.
"For me, I believe you will have a chance now to actually see a measurable comparison of coaching with a coach that coaches and a coach that motivates," Harrison explained. "That's what I think. Only time will tell."
That is one of the most pointed and honest takes you will ever hear from a former Steeler about the coaching transition happening in Pittsburgh right now. Harrison is not saying Tomlin was a bad coach. He is saying Tomlin was more of a motivator and McCarthy is a coach, and that those are two fundamentally different things. Tomlin built his entire career on getting players to believe in themselves and in each other. He was one of the great motivators in the history of the NFL and the results spoke for themselves with 19 consecutive non-losing seasons. However, motivation alone could not get this team past the first round of the playoffs in recent seasons, and Harrison is saying out loud what many Steelers fans have been thinking for years. There is a difference between inspiring people and coaching them, and Pittsburgh is finally going to find out what it looks like when you have someone doing both.

As SteelerNation has covered, McCarthy has already been praised for giving more detailed and nuanced feedback to his quarterbacks than Tomlin gave in years of coaching, and that difference in approach is exactly what Harrison is pointing to.
Steelers' New Coaching Shift Could Be The Key That Unlocks Everything In 2026
The weight of Harrison's take is only amplified when you consider who is saying it. This is not a media personality or an outsider looking in. This is a man who played for Mike Tomlin and knows firsthand what it looked like inside that building. He knows the difference between being motivated to go out and play hard, and being coached to play smart. What he is saying is that for the first time in a long time, the Steelers are going to have someone on the sideline who can do both. McCarthy's offensive mind, his attention to detail, his hands-on approach with quarterbacks, and his willingness to let Defensive Coordinator Patrick Graham run that side of the ball without interference are all things that represent a fundamental shift in how this organization operates day to day.

TJ Watt and Cam Heyward are still here. Jalen Ramsey is still here. DK Metcalf and Aaron Rodgers are still here. Harrison's point is that what was missing was someone who could take all of that talent and coach it up to the level it was always capable of reaching. Only time will tell if McCarthy is that person. However, for the first time in a long time, Steelers fans have a reason to believe the answer might finally be yes.
