Jerome Bettis Wants Steelers Fans To Quickly Understand This About The 2026 Season

The Pittsburgh Steelers have plenty of question marks heading into the 2026 season, but their roster construction is, for once, not really one of them. For the most part, pundits seem to be on board that this Steelers' roster has a "Super Bowl contender" mark written all over it. Of course, with the fact that Mike McCarthy is now the head coach, there are going to be plenty of unknowns, simply because of all the new changes and adjustments.

In the 2025 season, former head coach Mike Tomlin did what he could to construct a roster around veteran quarterback Aaron Rodgers. The Steelers finished with a 10–7 record and shocked many by winning the AFC North for the first time since the 2020 season. Still, it wasn’t enough for Tomlin, as he had not won a playoff game since the 2016 season, and that ultimately weighed heavily.

Tomlin elected to step down, and now the questions are beginning to get answered as the 2026 season officially inches closer. Former Steelers great running back Jerome Bettis always has insightful commentary for Steeler Nation. While speaking with DJ Siddiqi of The Action Network on Friday, Bettis shared critical information that Steelers fans need to know about how this 2026 roster compares to the 2025 version.

"Oh, 10 times better. They got more talent," Bettis said regarding the Steelers' 2026 roster compared to the 2025 one. "The key when you are diminished from a talent perspective, you don't give yourself a chance. And I think that's what was happening. They just didn't have enough. They had some talented players, but they just didn't have enough talented players to compete with some of the other top caliber football teams, and you saw it once they got to the playoffs, the latter part of the season when they started to struggle."

Rodgers came out and made it abundantly clear that after the 2026 season ends, he will be hanging up his cleats.

According to Bettis, that should provide this veteran Steelers roster with even more motivation.

"I think they understood that, and they went and tried to retool and get more talent in the building," Bettis said. "That's what they've done, and so let's see what happens this year. Obviously, there should be some motivation knowing that this is Aaron's last year, and I think that should carry through to the team, and hopefully play with a sense of desperation."

That added sense of finality around Rodgers’ career could become a defining factor for Pittsburgh’s locker room this season. With players fully aware that this will be his last ride, the urgency to capitalize on the moment becomes even more real.

Bettis knows all about that and he suggested that situations like this often bring teams closer together, especially when expectations are already high.

Steelers Still See Questions Remaining Ahead Of 2026 Regular Season

For a roster built with win-now intentions, the focus now shifts to execution rather than evaluation. The Steelers have made the necessary moves to position themselves as contenders, and anything short of a deep playoff run would likely be viewed as a disappointment. That pressure, however, is exactly what championship-caliber teams are expected to embrace.

Still, questions will remain until the games are actually played. New leadership, evolving chemistry, and the weight of expectations all introduce uncertainty, no matter how talented the roster may look on paper.
