Steelers Announce Protected Practice Squad Players For Week 1

In 2021, the Pittsburgh Steelers will be able to select four players each week from their practice to protect from being signed by other teams. This is a rule that was put in place last season and will continue over to this season as well.

This rule was put into place with the idea of teams that may be going through Covid-19 related roster issues having some added roster flexibility and protection.

On Tuesday, the Steelers announced the four members of their practice squad they selected to protect for Week 1. That list includes DE Henry Mondeaux, TE Kevin Radar, RB Jaylen Samuels, and WR Cody White. Radar was a frequent member of this list during the 2020 season as well.

It remains to be seen if any of these players will be elevated to the active roster ahead of the Steelers matchup vs. the Buffalo Bills. As long as no injuries pop up during the week, there shouldn't be a need to elevate one of these protected players between now and Sunday.
