Post Gazette: Steelers Cody White Says It's "Not Awkward" To Have Father In Front Office

The Pittsburgh Steelers have had several changes this off-season both on the field and in the front office. Some of the big moves include signing quarterback, Mitch Trubisky to a two-year deal and promoting Omar Khan to succeed Kevin Colbert as General Manager.

Another front office move made was hiring Sheldon White , father of Cody White, as the director of pro scouting. Sheldon White had a long history in the NFL dating back to 1988 and has held several front office roles.

Cody White played in 15 games last year and had five receptions for 33 yards and will be fighting for a spot on the active roster week in and week out in 2022. His main role was on special teams in 2021.

The Pittsburgh Post-Gazette released an article touching on Cody White's outlook having his father in the organization with such a key role. The Steelers wide receiver said that it isn't awkward having his dad around and that "both men know they have jobs to do that are separate from their family ties."

“It’s definitely crazy, but it’s always great to have family and somebody that you know in the office always,” Cody said Tuesday of the team officially hiring his father last week. “He was with the Lions for a long time, so for him to be able to come here and get that position is big for him. I’m excited for him," according to Brian Batko of the Post-Gazette.

It resonated with White that his father could have a say in his potential future with the Pittsburgh organization.

It never crossed his mind when he turned pro that some day his dad might be back in the NFL and potentially making a decision on his future. Of course, if it were going to happen in any organization, it would probably be the football-is-family Steelers, Cody said with a smile."

The NFL is a business and both White's seem to know that the nature of the league means their relationship in Pittsburgh must remain professional. Cody White also added to Batko:

“He knows he has a job to do. I know I have a job to do at the same time. We’re family, but we know it’s the NFL.”

Cody White is looking at the opportunity to be within the same organization with his dad as a dream come true. The Steelers were able to make it possible.

"Him just being with me and showing me the ropes, showing me the way — he’s been in it for a long time, so for me to be at this level now, for him to be with me is like a dream come true."

White has a tall task ahead of him, especially after the Steelers drafted two wide receivers in George Pickens and Calvin Austin III in April's draft. He will be fighting every day for the next few months to have a bigger role for the Steelers this year.

One has to respect the professionalism being shown by both White's as they begin their journey in Pittsburgh together.
