The Steelers lost their first free agent as the NFL's 'organized tampering' period is well underway Monday. While no deals can officially be signed teams are able to negotiate with free agents.
Former fifth round pick Jesse James is headed to Detroit on a multi-year deal. James served as the Steelers starting tight end over several games since he was drafted in 2015.

The team attempted to cut into his playing time with the signing of Ladarius Green, and then trading for Vance McDonald.
Green couldn't stay healthy and was released after just one year with the team. McDonald has struggled a bit to stay healthy, but was able to start 9 games last season. McDonalds athletic ability and ability to stretch the field makes him the superior option in the Steelers pass first offense.
The Steelers tendered an offer to restricted free agent tight end Xavier Grimble, but another team could sign him without the Steelers getting any return compensation. The team will have to draft a tight end or find one in free agency to back up McDonald.
