As free agency began at 4pm, the Steelers made some moves official. As we reported in the last few days the team officially released veterans Mike Mitchell and William Gay.
Along with Gay and Mitchell the team also announced the release of Robert Golden who mostly contributed on special teams, but had seen action at safety in place of starters due to injury.
So by releasing Robert Golden in addition to Mitchell and Gay, the Steelers cleared $6.785 in cap space

With Golden, and Mitchell relieved of their roster spots, the depth at safety becomes even more glaring.
JJ Wilcox, Sean Davis, and Jordan Dangerfield are the only safeties left with any experience. Malik Golden a second year player was also signed to a futures contract.
The team could still bring back Mitchell, Golden, or both on a lesser deal in the future if they aren't able to find a suitable replacement in the draft or free agency.
