Steelers Delontae Scott is Mirroring DPOY TJ Watt; Fighting to Make the Final 53

The Pittsburgh Steelers obviously have their starters in place at outside linebacker with the reigning Defensive Player of the Year, TJ Watt on one side and third-year veteran, Alex Highsmith, who took a big leap a season ago, on the other side. The Steelers are looking for viable rotation pieces to spell Watt and Highsmith during games this upcoming season. One of the Steelers' off-season additions, OLB Genard Avery has the upper hand to be the team's third guy and the first guy off the bench, but another outside linebacker is fighting and taking advantage of every opportunity he's getting in Latrobe.

OLB Delontae Scott continues to impress in training camp this year. He's fighting to make the final 53-man roster when final cuts are made. In a presser after practice on Wednesday via Steelers.com, Scott talked about his experience in training camp thus far and what he's doing to try to make this team. He seems to be a big Mike Tomlin guy and he appreciates when he has Tomlin's attention when his head coach yells, "Stay hot, 5-0!"

"We are all out here competing," said Scott. "It's a high-level competition. I always try to make sure I keep doing what I can, showing my abilities and what I can do on the field. If Coach T is peeking in, I appreciate it. We still have to work here every day."

Scott, who came into the league in 2020 as an undrafted rookie, initially signed with the Green Bay Packers, but he spent most of the 2021 season on the Steelers practice squad. He's aiming higher this year and he has a great mentor to look up to while doing so.

"Just what they say about Steelers defense in general," said Scott. "Just playing here is a huge blessing, especially for a guy who plays linebacker. Coach says, 'The standard is the standard.' When you have teammates like TJ, that is the standard, and you have to make sure you match his intensity when we play. That is how the whole group is."

"As long as I come in and keep working, work on stacking good days," Scott continued. "We have a great group of guys. We're all competing. I do feel like I have a chance, but it all depends on how everything works out."

"I always believe in myself and continue to work, trust the process and never get down on myself."

Scott is doing everything he can to make this team. He's made several big plays and has Tomlin on notice! He's fighting for a roster spot against guys like Derrek Tuszka and Tuzar Skipper to be the Steelers' fourth outside linebacker. According to our very own, Brandon James Wallace, Scott continued his impressive showing at camp on Wednesday.

Some others, like The Athletic's Mark Kaboly, have even called him the 2022 training camp "darling."
