Steelers Sign 3rd-Year OLB Ron'Dell Carter To Continue To Fulfill Front Seven Depth

The Pittsburgh Steelers have worked hard over the past few years to make their front seven depth a priority. They did just that again on Monday, signing veteran outside linebacker, Ron'Dell Carter, per Pro Football Network's Aaron Wilson. After ending last season as one of the worst run defenses, they've worked to make several moves in the trenches.

DeMarvin Leal was selected in the third round of the 2022 NFL Draft and recently, Doug Costin was signed via free agency. Costin's already showed some flashes at training camp, as he's been able to provide competition behind the starters. This signing of Carter though, will provide depth in arguably the team's weakest spot. Behind starters TJ Watt and Alex Highsmith, the team's backups are inexperienced at the position.

After spending the first few seasons of his college career at Rutgers, he transferred to James Madison University. There, he broke out, specifically in his last season in 2019. He racked up 12 sacks in his senior season, and while he didn't get drafted, he was a coveted undrafted free agent. Carter's spent time with the Dallas Cowboys and Houston Texans in his first two seasons, playing 43 defensive snaps and 42 special teams snaps. The Arizona Cardinals claimed Carter off waivers earlier this off-season, before eventually cutting ties with him.

This signing could spell bad news for either Derrek Tuszka or Tuzar Skipper. While the corresponding move has yet to announced, an injury could be a possibility as well. With Skipper listed as the fourth-string ROLB entering Monday, he may be the cut candidate. Delontae Scott has been one of the breakout stars from camp so far, leaving his roster spot as safe for the moment.

Do you see this move as another depth signing? Could he unseat Tuszka and Skipper for a backup OLB spot on the team? What are your thoughts on Steelers training camp so far? Let us know your thoughts in the comment section below!
