The Pittsburgh Steelers will be deploring a new third-string running back in 2023 after the team opted to not bring back Benny Snell Jr. As of now, the most likely candidate to fill this role is Anthony McFarland Jr., who has reportedly been very impressive thus far in Latrobe. Other players at the position such as Darius Hagans, Greg Bell and John Lovett will also have their opportunity over the next few weeks.

Steelers' Anthony McFarland Jr. Is The Favorite To Win The Third-String Running Back Job In 2023
The Steelers current options at ball-carrier are viable, and it is more likely than not that there will be at least three running backs on the 53-man roster during the 2023 season. However, the team may have another option at the position: second-year pro, Connor Heyward. Officially listed as a "TE/FB" on the roster, Heyward has demonstrated the ability to play a multitude of positions over the course of his playing career.
During his time at Michigan State, Heyward was a jack-of-all-trades type of player. He accumulated over 800 yards on the ground as well as another 700 yards receiving. At 230 pounds, there is no denying he has the necessary size to carry the football in the NFL.

Where Can The Steelers Best Utilize Heyward In 2023?
During Heyward's rookie campaign in 2022, he was mostly used as a traditional tight end. Needless to say, this will probably not be the case in 2023. Thus far in training camp, Heyward has seen reps at tight end, fullback and, most recently, running back.
Connor Heyward’s been working as the third team RB for a couple reps today. Really showing he can do a little bit of everything as a hybrid offensive skill player.

Heyward being utilized on third-down plays should come as no surprise, as he is a highly intelligent player who is effective in the receiving game as well as blocking out of the backfield. While McFarland, the presumptive favorite to win the third-string running back job, is talented as a receiver, he has yet to demonstrate the ability to pass block efficiently. Could this work in favor for Heyward in terms of seeing more snaps in 2023 compared to 2022? Even further, could his versatility allow for the Steelers to only carry Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren as the only two traditional running backs?
Having Heyward serve as the de-facto third running back and starting fullback could be beneficial for the Steelers in 2023, as it would essentially create two additional roster spots. Hypothetically speaking, the team may be able to carry an extra player at a position such as wide receiver, defensive back or linebacker instead. While Heyward assuming all three roles may seem like a lot to ask of a second-year player, it is worth noting that he was able to successfully manage a very similar workload at Michigan State.

Steelers Are Placing A High Emphasis On Versatility During 2023 Training Camp
Heyward playing running back is only the latest example of the Steelers asking their players to play multiple roles during 2023 training camp. Already, we have seen Patrick Peterson see snaps at safety and Kendrick Green line up at fullback. Ultimately, much of this moving around may be a seen as an experiment, but it will definitely be something to keep an eye on as the team's first preseason matchup against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers is just around the corner.
Regardless, the willingness of Heyward to play wherever the coaches ask him to deserves to be applauded. Whatever position he ends up seeing time at in 2023, he will be a difference maker. He undoubtedly has the potential to become a fan favorite in the Steel City by the time his sophomore campaign is over.
