"It's Just Instilled In Me," New Steelers' Linebacker Kwon Alexander Making Strong Case To Be A Starter In 2023

The Pittsburgh Steelers completely overhauled their inside linebacker room during the 2023 offseason. After moving on from players such as Myles Jack, Devin Bush, and Robert Spillane, the front office replaced them with Cole Holcomb, Elandon Roberts, and most recently, Kwon Alexander. Many believed Holcomb and Roberts would occupy the two starting spots, but following a strong performance from Alexander against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers during the Steelers' opening preseason contest, it is beginning to look like there is a serious competition battle to see who will open up the season on the first-team.

Steelers' Linebacker, Kwon Alexander Had An Impressive Performance In The Win Against The Buccaneers

Alexander was all over the place against the Buccaneers. His aggressive, downhill style of play was clearly evident as he had a number of big hits that will undoubtedly make him a fan favorite in Pittsburgh in no time. The 29-year-old linebacker has always been well known for his ability to cover receivers in space effectively, something that the Steelers' desperately need their off-ball linebackers to do in 2023.

In all likelihood, Holcomb will comprise one-half of the starting duo this upcoming season, leaving Alexander and Roberts to battle it out for the other spot. Both players have their strengths and have experience in commanding the middle of the defense as a leader. Roberts' physical style of play allows him to be a difference maker against the run, but is somewhat limited in his ability to defend the pass. Alexander, on the other hand, is a bit more well-rounded, but has struggled with injuries over the course of his eight-year NFL career. Fortunately, he was able to play in 17 games for the New York Jets in 2022, making 12 starts and compiling 69 total tackles.

Inside Linebacker Competition May Be Beneficial For Steelers

Regardless of who ends up starting at inside linebacker in 2023, the Steelers should be confident in their new crop of players at the position. In addition to Holcomb, Roberts, and Alexander, the team also has Mark Robinson, who is the lone returner from the positional group in 2022. All four players will look to solidly the middle of the defense for years to come, as the Steelers have had a revolving door at the position over the past few seasons.

Steelers' Linebacker, Mark Robinson Will Likely See An Increased Role In 2023

Alexander is perhaps the most intriguing member of the room. A former Pro Bowler in 2017 during his time with the Buccaneers, he has all the characteristics that make an off-ball linebacker a difference maker. His sideline-to-sideline speed combined with his willingness to take an offensive linemen at the line of scrimmage make him a viable candidate to be a three-down player for the Steelers in 2023. Following the team's preseason win over over the Buccaneers, Alexander explained where his passion for the game of football originates from.

Alexander has already proved to be a huge signing for the Steelers' defense. The trio of himself, Holcomb, and Roberts give the Steelers options to choose from when it comes to inside linebacker play. Assuming all three can stay healthy, there is reason to believe that the group will make the necessary "splash plays" and round-out a defense that is chalked full of talent at other areas. With an offense that is poised to also play better in 2023, the Steelers have built a roster that is capable of competing in an immensely competitive AFC. Make no mistake, Steeler Nation. This team is ready to make some serious noise this season.

Thoughts, Steeler Nation?

Do you think Alexander will end up being a starter by the time the regular season starts? What are your thoughts on how the defense played in the first preseason game? How confident are you in the new group of inside linebackers? Be sure to let us know in the comments!
