The Pittsburgh Steelers are in the midst of one of the largest roster turnovers in recent memory after making splashes in both free agency and the draft in 2023. This turnover has resulted in a renewed focus of investing in the offensive line.

Steelers offensive line in 2023 might have some significant turnover after big investments this past offseason.

Throughout the years, the Steelers have made it clear that when it comes to their offensive line, they have a strong preference to have at least a couple guys that are versatile and can easily fill in at multiple spots. Names such as J.C. Hassenauer and Doug Legursky could easily swap in for any of the three interior spots, and a player like Willie Colon was a solid starter whether the team wanted him at guard or tackle. Steeler Nation was lucky to have guys like these around.

The next man they may add to this list is the Steelers 2023 seventh round draft pick, Spencer Anderson

Steelers' Spencer Anderson Has A Unique Skill Set That Pittsburgh Has A History Capitalizing On

Anderson went to college at Maryland, a school everyone knows Mike Tomlin has a soft spot in his heart for. He started over 30 games at four different positions including center. This is a trait the team obviously keeps in a high regard, and based on Anderson's reps in both training camp and his first preseason game, the team is going to try and take advantage of.

Meeting with the media after practice, Anderson spent a few minutes talking about different topics including how he felt about his performance in preseason Week 1. During his time with the media, Anderson also talked about how he has worked with different players throughout camp, and went on bring up an analogy Dan Moore Jr. told him about how he respects the versatility Anderson has shown.

"It's kind of funny, he was telling me an analogy 'It's like wiping his butt with his left hand'. I was just thinking, I thought to myself if you break your right hand, if I break my right hand how would that be? My life would be miserable. Dan's like 'hats off to you' because you know he kind of struggles with it."

Well that is certainly a colorful analogy that can really paint a picture. We all experienced at times attempting to accomplish tasks with our non-dominant hand and realizing how awkward it feels and likely looks trying to complete.

For some offensive linemen, switching positions and swapping sides of the offensive line can have that same effect. Moore has recent experience with this as he has taken reps at right tackle during the 2023 offseason, likely due to the selection of offensive tackle, Broderick Jones in the first round by the Steelers. Moore is is dealing with flipping his mechanics after spending his first two years as the Steelers starting left tackle.

Steelers offensive linemen Dan Moore Jr. and Broderick Jones are in a battle for the starting left tackle spot this summer.

This exact scenario is something Anderson had to deal with on the fly during his first ever NFL game action. He was asked about how he seemed to be getting more reps on the left side, yet took the majority of his reps on the right side of the offensive line during the game.

"That's funny. I was working left sets before practice, pregame working left... You just have to be ready on the fly, even though I've been repping left all week. He said go to right.."

Anderson ended up playing both spots on the right side of the offensive line, as well as finishing the game over on the left side at guard. He performed rather well overall, especially in pass protection as he was one of the best linemen in pass protection during the game.

In order to make the team, Anderson faces an uphill battle with a lot of new faces in the room. Those faces include two free agent additions on the interior that received solid contracts in Isaac Seumalo and Nate Herbig, as well as the previously mentioned Jones being selected in the first round.

Not many offensive lineman have the willingness to be moved around the entire offensive line like the team has with Anderson, and even less have the ability to do it at a high level. If Anderson is able to prove he can possibly backup all five positions, he will be hard to keep off the team's initial 53-man roster.

What do you think about Anderson's ability to make the team, as well as his ability to flip spots along the offensive line rather seamlessly? Let us know in the comments below!
