The Pittsburgh Steelers offseason and preseason hype officially expired on Sunday after a beatdown at the hands of the San Francisco 49ers. Mike Tomlin's group wasn't a lock to win the matchup, but no one expected a 30-7 loss at Acrisure Stadium. One could argue that the only positive throughout the entire game was seeing TJ Watt healthy and flying around. The 2021 AP Defensive Player of the Year had three sacks and two forced fumbles, while recovering one of them himself. The problem was that the offense couldn't get any points on the board after what could have been momentum-shifting drives.

Watt's efforts, however, were only good enough to start another Defensive Player of the Year campaign. Losing by 23 points is not encouraging and was the second-worst loss of Week 1 with one game left to play on Monday night. The defense certainly had their quirks and had no answers for Brock Purdy, Christian McCaffrey or Brandon Aiyuk.
McCaffrey rushed for 152 yards and a touchdown while it also seemed like the Steelers had no game plan to stop Aiyuk. The pass catcher hauled in eight catches for 129 yards and two touchdowns. It was an ugly site in Pittsburgh and one that hopefully fans will not have to endure for the remainder of the 2023 season. The defense was not even close to the sole problem, though.
Matt Canada's offense was up to no good again, literally. The unit was only able to muster up 239 yards of total offense and 95 of them came on a two-minute drill drive at the end of the first half that led to the team's only score. One of the bigger concerns of the afternoon was how second-year quarterback, Kenny Pickett looked completely lost on the field.

To make matters worse, star receiver, Diontae Johnson left the game with a hamstring injury that looked quite serious. He quickly grabbed the back of his leg after a catch and run leading to him being on the sideline for the remainder of the contest. Allen Robinson II and Calvin Austin II seemed to be the top targets for Pickett throughout the majority of the game, which seems to have affected how George Pickens was feeling on the sidelines.
The Steelers Have Trouble In Paradise Already
The impressive second-year wideout caught five passes for 36 yards, but two of them came on the final drive during garbage time. Fans always like to dive into secret messages that players may or may not be sending on social media and after just one loss in 2023, Pickens may already be frustrated with his quarterback. Pickens liked an Instagram comment that insinuated the former second-round pick has no one to throw the ball to him.

Andrew Fillipponi of 93.7 The Fan sent this out early Monday morning and it only had two likes. One was from Pickens. The comment has now risen to 58 likes and Pickens has not taken it back. It's hard not to decipher this as frustration directed right at his quarterback. The comment speaks for itself and Pickens liking it is nothing short of a slight dig at Pickett.

In 2022, Pickens had a sideline outburst against the Atlanta Falcons after not getting the ball enough. Despite having five catches, Pickens seems to be desiring big, Pro Bowl-type numbers. His 2023 season did not start out like that. Getting badly beaten at home, while also not performing on offense quickly boiled over to social media. The Steelers have a longer week to get ready for the Cleveland Browns who will come to town for Monday Night Football in Week 2.
