The Pittsburgh Steelers were able to get their first win of the 2023 campaign against the Cleveland Browns in Week 2. The highlight of this game was the defense as they put up two touchdowns, four forced fumbles, an interception, and six sacks. TJ Watt proved that he should once again be in the running for Defensive Player of the Year and Alex Highsmith showed fans why he was worth the contract extension. Overall, the whole unit stepped up with veteran defensive tackle Cam Heyward injured. Now for the offense, that is a different story.

This Steelers Offense Needs A Change
For quarterback Kenny Pickett, his performance looked a lot like the week before. He threw for 222 yards with one touchdown and one interception. It wasn't terrible, but there is definitely room for improvement. The highlight of watching this offense was getting to see George Pickens targeted more. With 127 yards and a touchdown, he definitely was a bright spot on a rather rough offensive display.
The run game didn't look great either, but when you don't scheme well for situational football, it is hard to have an elite run game. So, to put all the blame on the offensive line, Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren wouldn't be right. At some point, Offensive Coordinator Matt Canada needs to take a step back and see what he can do differently to make this offense successful. Head Coach Mike Tomlin needs to be held accountable as well since Canada is his guy.
It’s still hard to fathom that with a chance to ice the game and make a statement, this was the play call that Matt Canada and the Steelers chose on 3rd and 1.

This one play basically wraps up Canada’s entire tenure as OC.

It is hard not to beat a dead horse since all of Steelers media has been saying this about Canada for the last two years, but nothing has changed. This offensive play-calling looks almost identical to what they tried to make it look like in 2021. The only difference is that they had Ben Roethlisberger at quarterback, who was a leader and could command this offense on his own. Something needs to change in this Steelers offense if they want to make a deep run into the postseason.

Canada's coaching has fans so fed up that a chant during Monday night's game broke out saying "Fire [Matt] Canada!" If that isn't a wake-up call to him, I don't know what else needs to be done. Even some of the higher-ups in sports media like Stephen A. Smith have started to call out his play-calling after what seemed to be another rough coaching display.

Although Canada is the play-caller and is supposed to command this offense, much of the accountability needs to be on Tomlin. With him being a veteran coach who some believe to be a future Hall of Famer, there needs to be a man-to-man conversation between the two of them on what needs to change to make this a top offense in the NFL.

Although everyone wants to see Tomlin step up and change this offense, that seems like it won't be happening anytime soon. Tomlin seemed to neglect the question about the chants for Canada during the team's Tuesday presser. It seemed like he was almost trying to protect his offensive coordinator and that nothing was wrong with the way their offense played.
Tomlin on the 'Fire Canada' from the crowd: "I appreciate their passion. ... This is the sport entertainment business. It's our job to win and thus entertain them. We don't begrudge them for that. We want them to fat and sassy and spoiled. That's our job."

Knowing that the offensive play-calling will most likely not change this year, one can only hope that Pickett can step up and take command like Roethlisberger used to do. He was voted as captain for a reason and needs to step up and run this offense like one. It seems like whatever happens the rest of the year will fall into his hands.
