Steelers Making A Surprising Move With Polarizing Matt Canada

The Pittsburgh Steelers 2023 season hasn't unfolded in the first two weeks like it seemed it was going to. The 2023 preseason lifted the expectations and hype to a new level, but now, with two regular season games behind us, there are more questions than answers. One big, looming question is what to do about the mediocre offense. Offensive Coordinator, Matt Canada hasn't put together a successful resume with Pittsburgh, and yet he remains in charge of their offense. Now, it seems like there is some strange movement going on within the Steelers camp.

Steelers Throwing Even More Support Behind Matt Canada

One would think that when you prove how bad you are at your job, especially over the course of several seasons, the correct response would be to either remove that person from their post or to limit their responsibilities. In Pittsburgh, though, it seems their strategy in 2023 is to do whatever is the opposite of a smart choice.

According to Jordan Schultz on X/Twitter, the Steelers have taken the Canada drama a step further by not only keeping him in his role, but also adding to what he is responsible for.

If you are asking yourself why this is happening, considering the Steelers already have a quarterbacks coach in Mike Sullivan, you are not alone. The move is baffling for so many reasons, but the biggest one is that it flies directly in the face of what everyone knows must be done. Canada shouldn't still have his job in Pittsburgh; the horrible showing in just two games in 2023 cemented that view. He underperformed as offensive coordinator both with Ben Roethlisberger in 2021 and then by having no clue what to do with a rookie in Kenny Pickett.

The move feels forced, as though the Steelers wanted to somehow appease both sides of the argument by keeping Canada, but also trying to subdue a fan base that knows something needs to be done here. With such promise entering the 2023 season, everything has crumbled since, and even a victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 2 isn't enough to calm the coming storm.

Steelers Making Desperate Moves With Canada

The 2023 season has done absolutely nothing to convince anyone that Canada should still be in charge of the Pittsburgh offense. Through their first two games of 2023, they have scored two offensive touchdowns, and the play calls have been just as tone-deaf as they were when Roethlisberger and Canada butted heads. Despite every bit of evidence pointing to Canada's dismissal, the Steelers have now decided that the opposite is the best way forward.

Schultz's post makes it quite clear that the Steelers front office communicated, looked over what was going on, and rather than coming to the conclusion that Canada needed to go, they threw in with him even more. Not only will this move fan the flames of anger that are rapidly growing around the Steelers, but it also brings up so many more questions than it does answers. One has to wonder which person was the one to offer a solution in a larger role for Canada, because when Canada does finally get fired, perhaps that person should be joining him.

So, Canada stays, and now the fans are even more confused. What role will Sullivan have going forward? Does this mean that Canada is taking on what Sullivan was doing before? What kind of interactions did Pickett and Canada have prior to this move? It doesn't instill confidence. The report from Schultz seems like parents putting out a newsletter where they are adamant that their kids aren't fighting because they have to spend more time together now. It rings hollow, especially when you consider the move that everyone knows should have happened.

Does this mean that Canada isn't going anywhere in 2023? It hints at it, but the biggest worry here should be that when those in charge of the Steelers franchise looked over the situation, this is the direction they chose to go. For all the hope that Canada would be removed, this report will do nothing to help the frustration that is threatening to boil over. If an entire crowd chanting to fire a coach doesn't get their point across, adding in the Steelers making it worse by handing Canada even more responsibility, one has to wonder where things are heading as we get further into 2023.
