When it comes to the Pittsburgh Steelers, their generosity to the city of Pittsburgh and the youth is something that the organization is very keen about. What started with Art Rooney and made its way to Art Rooney II, the entire family has made it a point to help the city in any way possible. With many monetary donations and showing up when the community needs them most, this family represents what it means to be a Steeler. Their service most definitely rubbed off on the players within the organization who have gone out and done their own service projects and given their own donations to the city.

The Steelers Have Announced A New Project

The Steelers have now announced a new project that can impact the city of Pittsburgh in a multitude of ways. On Thursday, they announced that their state-of-the-art community field and youth-recreation complex will begin construction in 2024 with intentions of the project being done in 2025. This project was rumored to be in the works over the summer and now the Steelers officially confirm their intentions.

The complex will be operated by the Steelers' charities. They will include youth football, boys and girls flag football, clinics and camps with past and present Steelers players, and much more.  As for the complex itself, it will be a renovated 10,000 square-foot building to ensure that sports and recreational activities can occur in the winter, as well as in the summer. Some of the future plans for the area would involve including food and beverage concessions, and enhancements to the main field so that it could be utilized for high school sports.

The Steelers already have a big involvement in high school sports in Pittsburgh. They announce a High School Football Coach of the Week Award to one coach in the area every week. They also showcase some of these high school athletes. But the biggest thing that the Steelers do for the area is have the WPIAL Championship games at Acrisure Stadium. So, with this new complex, the Steelers may be able to host multiple games throughout the year.

This current project is just another steppingstone in the various different ways that the Rooney's have impacted the community. One of the people who have been working on this project is Dan Rooney III, who is the grandson of the Steelers' former owner Dan Rooney. Rooney III, who is the Steelers' current Director of Business Development & Strategy, commented on this project.

"We are excited to be part of this special project which will provide the young athletes of our region access to a state-of-the-art facility at Hazelwood Green. Not only will the field be utilized for various clinics and games in the community, but the Steelers plan to use the field for community programming and player-led initiatives."

The funds for this project came as a grant awarded to the Steelers' charities from the Richard King Mellon Foundation for $10 million. Tishman Speyer will be the company that takes on the project. Some of the other teams that the company has taken on in the past are creating similar community-focused partnerships with the New York Yankees and the San Francisco Giants.

Although this program is done through the Steelers organization, their players have done a ton of great things to benefit the community. Just recently, the team's 2023 first-round pick, Broderick Jones hosted a holiday celebration for children awaiting adoption. The team's 2023 Walter Payton Award Nominee Cameron Heyward is another great example of giving back to the community for what he has done with his own organization alone.
