The Pittsburgh Steelers' 2023 season has been an exhausting ride for fans, but for 34-year-old captain Cam Heyward, it has been particularly challenging. Heyward has been candid about his frustrations with the NFL's scheduling, which forced the Steelers to play in four consecutive short weeks, taking a toll on his body.

On Wednesday, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette's Ray Fittipaldo reported that Heyward was asked about his plans for the 2024 season and whether he intends to return for another season with the Steelers. Heyward's response was centered on the state of his body.

Heyward, now in his 13th season with the Steelers, has faced the challenges of aging in a physically demanding sport. In 2023, his statistical output has taken a noticeable dip compared to previous seasons. He has recorded 31 tackles, six tackles for loss, and three quarterback hits, along with two sacks. In contrast, in 2022, he registered 74 tackles, 14 tackles for loss, 23 quarterback hits, and 10.5 sacks. Heyward's production has declined as he battles the relentless beast that is father time.

Despite his struggles this season, Heyward remains a beloved figure among Steeler Nation. His dedication and contributions to the team over the past 13 years have earned him a special place in the hearts of fans. Heyward has been selected to the Pro Bowl six times and has earned All-Pro honors three times during his illustrious career wearing the black and gold.

The decision about Heyward's future will ultimately hinge on how his body feels at the conclusion of the 2024 season, whenever that may be. While the game of football is known for its brutality and the NFL's "not for long" mantra, it would be a heartbreaking moment for Steelers fans if Heyward's storied career were to come to an end.

Asked what the criteria is going to be in terms of returning or not, said he needs to give his body time to recover bc this season has been rough.
Another factor that could come into play here is Heyward's contract. Steelers insider Gerry Dulac believes that Heyward may have to take a massive pay cut if he does decide to return for the 2024 season. Heyward is scheduled to earn $16 million in salary next season. Dulac believes he needs to rework his deal with the Steelers should he elect to return for his final year of his contract.
Steelers Hope For An Extended Season
Both the Steelers fans and Heyward himself hope to extend the season beyond Week 18 when they face the Baltimore Ravens. Should the Steelers not make the playoffs, the possibility of witnessing Heyward's final game on Sunday is a somber thought for Steeler Nation. The decision regarding his future will undoubtedly carry a mix of emotions, as fans reflect on the remarkable career of a true Pittsburgh legend.
