Sharp: Steelers' Quarterback Problem Entering 2024 Proves That Organization Has Become Unserious

The Pittsburgh Steelers are still on the search for their new franchise quarterback after two years since Ben Roethlisberger retired. The organization has had average or worse play at the quarterback position since the 2022 season began. Bringing in quarterbacks like Mitch Trubisky, Kenny Pickett, and even giving Mason Rudolph another chance, has not led to the Steelers finding their guy. Obviously, that has not been the case. With that, the Steelers aren't being taken seriously.

Two seasons ago, Pittsburgh brought in a former first-round pick in Trubisky in hopes that the Steelers could guide the quarterback in a way that the Chicago Bears could not. Trubisky was fine with Chicago, throwing 64 touchdowns and 37 interceptions in his first four years. When Chicago moved on, analysts said Trubisky wasn't given enough weapons.

Coming to Pittsburgh, that would not be an excuse. Even with all of the talent on the Steelers' offense, Trubisky failed. This led to the start of Pickett's career in the Steel City. Pickett has been better, but not by much. The quarterback has remained the starter ever since he relieved Trubisky of his duties early-season 2022.

Now, as the team heads into the 2024 offseason, the Steelers are questioning whether Pickett should remain their starter, or if the long-time backup in Rudolph should be the starter. Rudolph was able to perform well at the end of the 2023 season while Pickett was hurt, and now it seems that the Steelers' organization is split between who deserves the ball on Sundays.

Rudolph finished the last three games for the Steelers in the 2023 regular season, securing victory in all three. The Steelers' leaders have already implied that Pickett will be the starter heading into the offseason, although they will want to give him some competition. The Steelers would like that competition to be Rudolph, but the quarterback has been said to want a new start somewhere.

Steelers' Hope For QB1 Competition To Be Between Pickett And Rudolph

With that being said, it's almost a joke to believe that a franchise that wants to win Super Bowls is even considering these two to be the ones to lead the black and gold. Not that neither of them aren't capable of performing well, it just hasn't been shown on the field enough. NFL analyst Warren Sharp chimed in on what he thinks of the Steelers quarterback blunder.

Zero playoff wins in seven years. That is not Steelers football. Sharp, like many other analysts have already said, the Steelers are just not serious about their "standard" if their quarterback competition has come down to Pickett and Rudolph. The Steelers are actually favorites to land some of the bigger name quarterbacks that are on the market, but Pittsburgh has made it crystal clear that they are not making any big moves and that Pickett will be given the ball.

If the Steelers want to be taken seriously, then they need to get elite play out of the quarterback. This league is an offense and quarterback driven league, the only way to get back to the standard is to make a change.

What do you think? Will the Steelers continue to be the laughing stock of the NFL with Pickett as the quarterback? Or will he develop into the leader that Pittsburgh had all hoped for? Let us know in the comments below.
