The Pittsburgh Steelers have been one of the main teams in the NFL that have been brought up when it comes to free agent quarterback or trade targets. The organization has struggled at the position, and wants to bring in competition for Kenny Pickett. Some of the names that have been mentioned with the Steelers are Russell Wilson, Kirk Cousins, and Justin Fields. The first two names are expected to be free agents once Wilson is officially released, but the Steelers would need to agree with the Chicago Bears on a trade to acquire Fields. Rumors have been buzzing all offseason, but it is reported a deal will get done sooner rather than later.

Steelers will have an opportunity to trade for Chicago Bears QB Justin Fields.

Steelers' Trade For Fields Could Happen At NFL Combine

Throughout the entire offseason, the Steelers and Fields have been mentioned within the same breath. They are one of the most likely candidates to trade for the fourth-year quarterback. One of the key benchmarks in the NFL offseason, the NFL Combine, is approaching. This is a time when executives from all around the league come together to evaluate the future of the league. It is also a time when offseason moves are made, due to the proximity of every general manager in the NFL. NFL reporter, Albert Breer, recently reported that the organization is working with some urgency to get a trade done.

"I think the bones of the trade will be set next week. There's some urgency on the Bears part to get something done."

The Bears are set on keeping the first overall pick and using it to draft their quarterback of the future, which will likely be Caleb Williams. They are expected to be asking for a second round pick and a later round pick in exchange for Fields, who they drafted with the 11th overall pick in the 2021 NFL Draft.

Steelers have a chance to obtain Justin Fields in the 2024 offseason.

The Steelers have been heavy favorites to land Fields ever since Adam Schefter brought up how much Head Coach Mike Tomlin loves Fields on The Pat McAfee Show. Other teams that could be interested in Fields include the Atlanta Falcons, New England Patriots, and Las Vegas Raiders. All three of those teams are in the same boat as Pittsburgh, where they don't have a franchise quarterback to move forward with.

The trade will likely happen soon because of the combine, but also because the Bears want to move on from Fields and get the dramatics over with. Bears insider, Ben Devine, brought up other factors that could make the organization want to get this deal done sooner rather than later.

Once free agency begins on March 13th, guys like Cousins and Wilson will become available to sign. This will drop Fields' value a ton, which is why moving him now is the smart play for Chicago. They can maximize their return if the deal gets finished before free agency. Keep an eye out for the Steelers once the combine starts on February 26th, they may be heading home from Indianapolis with a new quarterback.
