Leading up to the 2024 NFL Draft starting on April 25th, we will be releasing several draft profiles of prospects who could potentially see themselves on the Pittsburgh Steelers. Next up...

Mims stands in at a massive 6'8" tall, weighing 340lbs, and has as high of a ceiling as anyone in this draft.

Amarius Mims started just a handful of games for Georgia, but possesses elite potential due to his unique blend of size and athleticism.

Steelers Overview

Mims is part of this absolutely loaded top end of the offensive tackle draft class in 2024, and honestly has a chance to be the best of the bunch when the dust settles. He is still a bit raw and will require some refinement in areas, which is somewhat to be expected given his limited number of starts (eight), but he is still farther along than most 21 year old players with limited experience.

Pros:

- Size, length are elite

- No concerns about weight, extremely good body build

- Very good mover in space

- Great power in his punches

- Gets depth in his sets with ease

- Solid recognition on stunts, especially for a player with limited experience

- Drives defenders off the line of scrimmage with good leg drive

Cons:

- Minimal starting experience

- Two hand punching causes him to lunge at opponents at times

- Improvement to footwork will be needed

- Stands too tall when trying to sustain blocks

The Steelers traded up to select Broderick Jones in the 2023 NFL Draft, and just might be interested in pairing him with Mims to form a Georgia Bulldog tandem on the bookends of their offensive line. Moving Jones back to the left side appears to be high on the priority list this offseason, so someone like Mims who has mainly been a right tackle makes a lot of sense.

Amarius Mims has tremendous length and foot quickness, which allows him to be an above average pass protector, despite limited playing time.

Hand Technique and Footwork

Understandably, this will be where Mims has the most improvement needed. While he has strong hands and can neutralize defenders quickly, his recovery punches sometimes fail to land and he tends to lunge trying to make contact. His footwork is a work in progress at this point, but he definitely has the required athleticism and foot quickness to fix this. Paired with a solid coach, as well as just more experience, he should be able to work through these issues.

Mobility and Athleticism

Mobility is one of the stronger areas of Mims' game as his short area foot quickness is some of the best in this draft. This allows him to reach block or get to the second level without much difficulty. His overall athleticism is solid, especially for his size, and there aren't any limitations in his game because of it.

Power and Strength

Mims has incredibly strong hands, and when he connects on his punches he is able to significantly slow even power rushers down in a hurry. His power is evident, so using better technique to continue to utilize that power should only improve his ability in the ground game especially.

NFL Comparison - Jordan Mailata

Both tackles possess tremendous size/length and have very good foot quickness in close areas, but both had a ways to go in terms of their technique. Mailata was able to get that technique improved after being a rugby player and is now one of the best tackles in the league, so no reason Mims shouldn't be able to make strides as well.

Draft Projection - Late First Round Pick

There are going to be a lot of offensive tackles taken in the first round, and Mims will likely be one of them. If this class wasn't so deep at the top, Mims would probably go top 20.
