The Pittsburgh Steelers have made it clear where they aim to improve. In the 2023 NFL Draft, they traded up to select Broderick Jones. In his first season with the organization, he impressed fans with his potential, proving to be a strong pick and someone the Steelers can trust to help lead their offensive line in the future.

In the 2024 NFL Draft, the Steelers continued to build their front line. They selected Troy Fautanu in the first round, a pick praised by pundits for its value and potential. In the second round, the Steelers drafted center Zach Frazier, who comes with high expectations of becoming the next great Steelers center. Acquiring Fautanu and Frazier back-to-back was a significant move, and their growth together should help fortify the trenches.
In the fourth round, the Steelers selected guard Mason McCormick from South Dakota State. Although considered an under-the-radar prospect due to his college, he impressed scouts when his team raised their level of competition. McCormick has wasted no time impressing his teammates at Organized Team Activities. In a video from Steelers.com, teammate Dan Moore Jr. praised his conduct and believes he has massive potential in Pittsburgh.
"I think Mason [McCormick] is gonna be a really good player. I think he's got some good tools. He's football smart. You can just tell he kind of moves like a vet just with his routine and everything. I think Mason is going to be a good player.”
McCormick stands 6'4" and weighs 310 pounds, and one of his most praised traits by scouting pundits is his relentless effort. He consistently finishes plays, is strong and thick-chested, and will fight hard to protect his quarterback. However, concerns have been raised about his susceptibility to being moved out of position and his struggles to keep defenders centered. Despite these worries, McCormick has the potential to improve in these areas and make a significant impact in Pittsburgh.

In 2023, McCormick earned a spot on the AP FCS All-American First Team. He was a zero-star recruit coming out of high school and has faced long odds throughout his career. Despite doubts, he has consistently overachieved.

He even had the opportunity to transfer to a major Division I team, but chose to stay loyal to his small school, valuing the support and development he received over potential NIL deals. This decision paid off when the Steelers drafted him in the fourth round of the 2024 NFL Draft.
Steelers' Mason McCormick Is A Perfect Fit For Pittsburgh's New Offensive Scheme
He started 57 consecutive games as a left guard and served as a three-time team captain in college, demonstrating his ability to lead and inspire his teammates. McCormick also competed in track and field, showcasing his athleticism. He was a four-year starter in a run-heavy system, which aligns well with the Steelers' expected offensive strategy for the 2024 season under new offensive coordinator, Arthur Smith.

McCormick is projected to play left guard for the Steelers. Veteran Isaac Seumalo, who had a solid 2023 season with a Pro Football Focus grade of 71.9, is set to be the starter. McCormick will have the opportunity to earn a backup spot and potentially see playing time in 2024. He has already impressed teammate and fellow offensive lineman Moore.
