The Pittsburgh Steelers' quarterback room underwent a significant transformation in the 2024 offseason. The changes began with the addition of Russell Wilson on a one-year deal for the veteran minimum. Shortly after, the Steelers traded away their former first-round pick quarterback, Kenny Pickett, who was unhappy with Wilson's arrival. Pickett was sent to the Philadelphia Eagles.

The Steelers quickly made another move, trading with the Chicago Bears to bring in their former first-round pick quarterback, Justin Fields. This revamped their quarterback lineup with a seasoned veteran and a promising young talent. The major offseason debate has centered around who the Steelers should start at quarterback. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin has stated that, as of now, Wilson is the starter, but Fields will have the opportunity to compete for the position.

The Steelers have dismissed any speculation about using Fields in unconventional formations as a runner or passer. Despite this, opponents have indicated they are preparing for the possibility of seeing Fields in unique plays during the 2024 season. To revitalize their struggling offense, the Steelers hired Arthur Smith as their new offensive coordinator.

Smith is known for his creative play-calling during his tenure with the Tennessee Titans, particularly his innovative use of running back Derrick Henry. This history has led many pundits to believe the Steelers might employ similar strategies with Fields. NFL insider Jeremy Fowler discussed these rumors on ESPN's NFL Live, sharing reports he's heard from around the league.

"Russell Wilson's undisputably the QB number one. He's not splitting reps. However, I've talked to multiple teams who expect the Steelers to utilize Justin Fields as a runner and passer in the goal line, think eight yards and in.”

Fowler made his stance on the Steelers' starting quarterback clear: Wilson will undoubtedly be the starter. However, he noted that many teams are preparing for Fields to be used in the red zone as both a runner and a passer, similar to strategies Smith occasionally employed during his tenure as the Titans' offensive coordinator.

“Arthur Smith, the new OC, used Derrick Henry as a quarterback/passer when he was in Tennessee calling plays, so why couldn't you use a guy like Fields with his big-time ability?"

The Steelers have endured some of the worst offensive performances in the league over the past few seasons. However, fans are hopeful that Smith can bring innovation and turnaround. Smith plans to implement a lot of play-action and a heavy rushing attack, utilizing the great personnel he has in Pittsburgh.

It's no secret how dangerous Fields is with his legs. In his three NFL seasons, Fields has excelled on the ground, though he has struggled as a passer. Known as one of the best running quarterbacks in the league, Fields has rushed 356 times for 2,220 yards and 14 touchdowns in his career. The Steelers also boast a talented running back room with the dynamic duo of Najee Harris and Jaylen Warren.

Steelers' Offense Could Be Very Scary In 2024

These two running backs are expected to be heavily featured in Smith's new system. Adding Fields into the mix could create a formidable and fearsome offense. No defense wants to face the challenge of stopping Fields, Harris, and Warren. While some doubt the Steelers would use Fields in the red zone, taking Wilson out and letting Fields come in, or even having both quarterbacks on the field at the same time, remains an intriguing possibility. Either way, the Steelers have many options, and they could be very successful.

Steelers fans are eager to see how creative Smith can get in 2024. With their new additions and personnel, the Steelers' offense is in very good hands, and the tide should turn for Pittsburgh.
