The Pittsburgh Steelers embarked on a legendary run during the 2005 NFL season. Entering the playoffs as a sixth seed, few expected them to clinch the Super Bowl title that year. With their playoff hopes in jeopardy at 7-5, the Steelers rallied with a four-game winning streak, finishing the season at 11-5.

The postseason journey began on the road against the Cincinnati Bengals, where the Steelers triumphed 31-17. This victory set up a challenging matchup with the top-seeded Indianapolis Colts, also on the road. After defeating the Colts, the Steelers headed to Mile High City to face the Denver Broncos, whom they dispatched with ease, earning a trip to the Super Bowl to face the NFC's top-seeded Seattle Seahawks.
The Super Bowl had a movie-like plot as legendary running back Jerome Bettis aimed to retire as a champion in his hometown. The Steelers went on to beat the Seahawks, making Bettis a Super Bowl champion as he retired from the game.
Who is Roethlisberger?” answer tonight on Jeopardy. And why they make Cowher bring up Big Ben’s bad Super Bowl stats in the clue??? Not cool. pic.twitter.com/2zvUuCs5Qm

In a recent episode of Jeopardy!, one of the answers involved Steelers quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. The iconic Bill Cowher appeared on screen to present the question, adding a special touch to the moment.
“I coached the first sixth-seeded team to win the Super Bowl, even though this quarterback for my Steelers threw for half as many yards as the Seahawks passer.”
In the big game, Roethlisberger did not deliver a standout performance. However, the Steelers didn't need him to shine individually to secure the victory. Roethlisberger completed just 42.9% of his passes, totaling 123 yards, with zero touchdowns and two interceptions. It was far from his best game. However, he did rush for 25 yards and a rushing touchdown.

On the other hand, Seahawks quarterback Matt Hasselbeck had a more productive passing game, though he also struggled. With the Seahawks trailing and attempting a comeback, Hasselbeck completed 53.1% of his passes for 273 yards, one touchdown, and one interception. Overall, it wasn't the most impressive display by the quarterbacks.
The Steelers' run during the 2005 playoffs was nothing short of magical. However, it could have ended in disaster when Bettis fumbled at the goal line against the Colts. In that crucial moment, Roethlisberger became the unexpected hero—not just for his quarterbacking skills, but for a game-saving tackle he made while running backward. This remarkable play preserved the Steelers' lead, and when the Colts missed a subsequent field goal, the Steelers advanced to the next round.
Throughout that postseason, Roethlisberger had promised Bettis four footballs—one after every game and one after winning the Super Bowl. The Steelers fulfilled that promise, marking one of the most memorable playoff runs in the franchise's history.
Steelers' Ben Roethlisberger Had A Great Playoff Run
While Roethlisberger didn't have his best performance in the Super Bowl, his overall postseason play told a different story. Across all four playoff games in the 2005 season, he completed 62.4% of his passes, threw for 803 yards, and recorded seven touchdowns against three interceptions. His contributions were instrumental in getting the Steelers to the big game and ultimately securing the Super Bowl victory, despite his less-than-stellar statistical showing in the final game.

For Steelers fans, seeing Cowher make a lighthearted joke about this iconic run on a popular game show was a delightful moment, adding a touch of humor to the storied legacy of that unforgettable season.
