The Pittsburgh Steelers made significant moves this offseason, completely overhauling their quarterback room. None of the quarterbacks from the 2023 season are still with the team. Among the biggest news was Pittsburgh trading for former Chicago Bears first-round pick quarterback Justin Fields, even though they had just signed Russell Wilson to a one-year deal at the veteran minimum.

Many pundits have spent the offseason debating what Pittsburgh should do at quarterback. Both Wilson and Fields have struggled recently, but they clearly have potential. Wilson has had an elite career despite two subpar seasons, while Fields, in his three NFL seasons, has yet to prove he can be the face of a franchise.
The Steelers plan to start Wilson, with Fields having a chance to compete for the job. This has drawn significant attention to Fields. Every workout video he posts receives scrutiny or excitement. In a recent social media video of Fields throwing to the Route God, former Steelers running back Le'Veon Bell criticized Fields for late throws.
that ball gettin there lateeeeeeeee .. I know it’s routes on air, but this is telling you a lot https://t.co/eKm7WJbWrA

Bell's analysis was met with plenty of criticism from Fields' fans and Pittsburgh fans alike. The player catching the footballs, James Everett, knows what really happened during the workout. He took to social media to defend Fields and explain why the throws appeared late.

Bell was a dominant player during his time in Pittsburgh, excelling with a patient running style and as a valuable weapon in the receiving game. He was one of the best receiving backs in the league during his tenure. With his experience, he knows what a late throw looks like. However, it appears Fields was working on his progressions. Everett backed Fields, calling him a great quarterback and praising his passes.

The Steelers' quarterback room continues to be in the spotlight. Steelers fans are excited about having both Wilson and Fields in town. Both quarterbacks are looking to rebound from low points in their careers. Wilson aims to prove he can still be an elite quarterback in the NFL, while Fields is determined to show he can be a capable starting quarterback.
Wilson will start the year as the starting quarterback, with Fields competing to try and take the job from him. The Steelers' quarterback performance in 2023 was dismal, with a combined total of just 13 passing touchdowns and nine interceptions. Either Wilson or Fields would be considered a significant upgrade.
Fields is one of the best athletes in the NFL, which led to wild rumors about Pittsburgh potentially using him as a kick returner—a scenario the team has since admitted is unlikely. Despite his struggles with decision-making and passing, some fans believe Fields still has the potential to lead a franchise, while others think he is destined to be a career backup. However, his raw athleticism and versatility continue to make him a valuable asset. This is exactly why Pittsburgh was willing to take a chance on him.
Steelers' Justin Fields Wants To Steal The Job From Russell Wilson
Fields himself has a great attitude about his new situation, embracing the challenge with optimism and determination. It will be interesting to see if he can steal the starting job from Wilson, showcasing his abilities and proving his critics wrong.

Steelers fans are eagerly anticipating improved quarterback play in 2024, hoping that, if given the chance, Fields can be the spark that ignites their offense and leads them to success. With his unique skill set and competitive spirit, Fields remains a player to watch as the season unfolds. If the season goes as planned. That means Wilson was a solid quarterback for Pittsburgh. It truly is the best of both worlds for the Steel City.
