The Pittsburgh Steelers have had an eventful offseason, generating a lot of excitement among fans as players begin to report to training camp. With new additions and upgrades, there's hope that the team can address the offensive struggles that have plagued them in recent seasons.

One of the most notable moves was the hiring of Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith. While Smith had challenges as a head coach, he was previously known as one of the best offensive minds in the league. He favors using tight ends and employing play-action strategies, and he wants to bring back a physical running game, a style that has historically been successful for the Steelers.
This bodes well for Steelers tight end Pat Freiermuth, who is expected to have a breakout season. Freiermuth is entering the final year of his rookie contract and will become a free agent after the 2024 season. Fans are curious whether the organization will secure a new deal for him before the season starts or wait until after it ends. Traditionally, the Steelers do not negotiate contracts during the season. That will not change.
Steelers media personality Andrew Fillipponi recently shared on social media that he has heard Freiermuth could be signed to a big extension before the week ends.
I keep hearing that a Pat Freiermuth extension could be done by the end of the week. Both sides want to make a deal. Feels like a fait accompli.

The Steelers drafted Freiermuth in the second round of the 2021 NFL Draft. In his rookie season, he had the opportunity to catch passes from legendary quarterback Ben Roethlisberger. Freiermuth impressed with 60 receptions for 497 receiving yards and seven touchdowns, sparking excitement among fans about his potential.

Former Steelers quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger (7) and tight end Pat Freiermuth (88) come out of the tunnel before a regular season game in 2022.
However, over the next two seasons, Freiermuth struggled in a historically poor offensive system that didn't utilize him effectively. He also suffered from inconsistent quarterback play, resulting in just four touchdowns—two in each season. In 2023, he caught only 32 passes for 308 yards and dealt with injuries, playing in just 12 games and starting nine.
Looking ahead to 2024, Freiermuth is expected to play a significant role in the Steelers' receiving game. With the departure of wide receiver Diontae Johnson, the team needs additional receiving threats alongside George Pickens. Given Smith's affinity for involving tight ends in the offense, Freiermuth is poised for a breakout season, especially with improved quarterback play.
Steelers May Gamble For Value With Pat Freiermuth
The Steelers are unlikely to move on from Freiermuth this early in his career. While he hasn't yet met expectations, much of that can be attributed to factors beyond his control. The team may want to see how he performs in a full year under Smith's system before committing to a long-term deal. However, they might also choose to secure his future in Pittsburgh now, potentially saving money if he has a standout season.
Traditionally, the Steelers do not negotiate contracts during the season. Fillipponi has suggested that the team could finalize an extension for Freiermuth before the week ends. Steelers fans are eager to see what kind of deal he might sign. If he performs how many pundits believe he will in 2024. His price could go way up.

The organization might be motivated to lock him in before his value potentially increases, contrasting their approach with running back Najee Harris, whose fifth-year option they declined. Steelers fans will keep their eyes open to see if the organization gets something done with their star tight end before the season starts.
