The Pittsburgh Steelers’ training camp has seen its share of intensity, and Wednesday’s practice was no exception. During the session, a heated altercation broke out when Elandon Roberts shoved quarterback Justin Fields at the end of a run. The incident sparked a brawl, with the Steelers’ offensive line quickly intervening to protect their quarterback.

Among the first to stand up for Fields were rookie offensive linemen Mason McCormick and Troy Fautanu. Following the skirmish, Roberts addressed the incident, stating he would steer clear of targeting the quarterback in the future. He expressed his approval of the offense's reaction, emphasizing that it’s crucial for the team to support their quarterback.

Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin spoke to the media after practice, labeling the fight as unprofessional.
“Man, really good work day out here. I loved the energy and enthusiasm. Obviously, we are at the very beginning of this process, so there’s a lot of lessons to be learned. Some formal and some informal. We got a little bit less than professional and chippy today. It’s an opportunity to teach and learn. It’s part of this process as much as we hate it.”
Tomlin said exactly what you would expect him to say. However, there might be a silver lining for Tomlin. While he criticized the brawl, he could secretly appreciate the fierce loyalty displayed by his young offensive line. Their readiness to defend their quarterback suggests a strong team spirit, which could be beneficial for the Steelers in the long run.

The Steelers have plenty to be excited about as they head into the 2024 season. The offensive unit, which was a significant weakness in 2023, has been a major focus this offseason. The team made a pivotal move by hiring Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith, who aims to restore a physically dominant, aggressive style of play. Smith's vision includes a heavy emphasis on utilizing tight ends and a robust run game, a return to the Steelers' traditional strengths.

While it's not ideal to see teammates fighting, the fact that two young rookies are battling for their quarterback's protection is a positive sign. This kind of intensity and physicality has been missing from the Steelers' offense in recent years.
Steelers' Offensive Line Wants All the Smoke In 2024
In addition to Smith’s arrival, the Steelers have made substantial investments in their offensive line through the draft. They traded up to select tackle Broderick Jones in the 2023 NFL Draft, and in 2024, they used their first-round pick on Fautanu. They also drafted center Zach Frazier in the second round and McCormick in the fourth round.
The offensive line has clearly been a focal point for the Steelers, and many analysts anticipate significant improvements for the 2024 season. This young unit may need some time to gel and adjust to the NFL, but the future looks promising.

Recent training camp activities have reflected this renewed energy. A minor altercation between the offense and defense, although not serious, highlighted the increased intensity and competitive spirit in camp. Tomlin's reaction to the scuffle indicates an understanding of these occurrences as part of the game.
As the camp progresses, the Steelers' offensive line will be focused on keeping their quarterback protected. It will be intriguing to see which rookies emerge and contribute to this evolving unit. With the changes and investments made, the Steelers' offensive future appears bright.
