The Pittsburgh Steelers had an impressive offseason and an even more remarkable 2024 NFL Draft. While it's challenging to fully evaluate the success of their draft picks at this stage, as it often takes several seasons to see the results, early feedback from pundits has been very positive. Many have praised the Steelers for the value they obtained with their selections and for addressing key team needs.

One standout value pick was linebacker Payton Wilson, chosen 98th overall in the third round. This selection received high praise, as Wilson brings exceptional talent to an already strong linebacker group. Despite being considered one of the top linebackers in the draft, Wilson dropped to the third round due to injury concerns. One pundit even noted that they would prefer three years of Wilson's potential over several seasons of another prospect.

Wilson's arrival has generated significant excitement in Pittsburgh. As training camp kicks off in Latrobe, many eyes are on Wilson and his performance. Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin addressed the media after Sunday's practice, commenting on Wilson's impressive plays during the session.

"He's highly conditioned. I think it starts there, and it's showing itself in the form of hustle and finish and sometimes hustle and finish puts you in position to do some of the things that you mentioned," Tomlin said. "And so, we don't ask a lot of the new guys, but we do ask him to come ready for the work."

Many Steelers fans are eager to see what role 24-year-old rookie Wilson will play in the upcoming season. Wilson has expressed his determination to do whatever it takes to contribute, even if that means starting on special teams.

He is committed to giving his all and making an impact. Tomlin has been particularly impressed with Wilson's physical condition, suggesting that it could earn him a real opportunity at the linebacker position in 2024.

"He is highly conditioned and appears to be in position in that regard, certainly."

In college, Wilson was one of the most dominant linebackers in recent years. During his time at NC State, he had an outstanding 2023 season, earning several accolades, including the Chuck Bednarik Award, the Butkus Award, and Unanimous All-American honors. Additionally, Wilson was named the ACC Defensive Player of the Year. His impressive performance on the field underscored why he received these honors, solidifying his reputation as one of the best linebackers in the nation during the 2023 season.

However, questions remain about Wilson's ability to stay healthy. He has expressed confidence that he can become one of the NFL's top linebackers if he can avoid injuries. If Wilson remains healthy, the Steelers may have secured a significant steal in the 2024 NFL Draft by selecting him.

NFL Insider Ian Rapoport reported concerns about Wilson's injury history, including a claim that Wilson lacks an ACL in one of his knees—a point Wilson has kind of disputed. Rapoport also mentioned a lingering shoulder issue stemming from a previous operation and multiple knee injuries throughout Wilson's college career.

Despite these concerns, Wilson is confident in his ability to stay healthy. He points to his game tape from his final college season as evidence that his injury history has not hampered his performance. Wilson is meticulous in his preparation, often being the first on the field to complete a 25-minute warm-up routine, which he believes is crucial for injury prevention. He refuses to cut corners, demonstrating his commitment to maintaining his physical condition.

Steelers' Payton Wilson Has A Real Chance To Make A Big Impact As A Rookie

Although Wilson is a rookie, he doesn't carry himself like one. The excitement surrounding the Steelers' new linebacker is palpable. He's known for his speed and ability to get to the football, and he has already shown leadership qualities and professionalism.
