Steelers Rookie Zach Frazier Seems To Lock Up Starting Role After Glowing Remarks From Mike Tomlin

The Pittsburgh Steelers are expecting a lot from their rookie class in the 2024 season, especially the top selections. The Steelers lost their second preseason game to the Buffalo Bills by a score of 9-3. There was a lot to complain about, but also some positives. One shining factor in the game was rookie center Zach Frazier, who started the game as Nate Herbig suffered a shoulder injury sometime during the last week of practice.

There are high hopes and expectations for Frazier, as Pittsburgh has a strong lineage of spectacular play at the center position. He fits the mold to be a great center for the Steelers and, so far, he seems to be getting off on the right foot. He struggled some at the start of training camp, but he now seems to have his feet under him and he is rolling. Head Coach Mike Tomlin had nothing but good things to say about what he saw from Frazier during his post game press conference.

"I was largely satisfied with the work that I saw from Zach [Frazier]."

Tomlin usually likes to pick performances apart, and rarely does he give a compliment that isn't followed by some sort of critique. Frazier was able to receive a strong compliment from his head coach after just his second preseason performance. It is unclear how long Herbig will be out with his injury, but it sure seems like Frazier has a strong chance to be the center on opening day against the Atlanta Falcons.

The starting offensive line as a whole did not play well on Saturday night. Russell Wilson was sacked three times, and the offense struggled to find it's rhythm. The unit didn't get their first first down until their third possession, which is unacceptable in a preseason setting. It is hard to find many good things to say about the starting offensive unit for the Steelers, but Frazier certainly was a bright spot.

Frazier was thought to be ready to start right after he was drafted, but the Steelers usually like to slowly work their rookies into the starting lineup. It seems as though Frazier will be an exception, as will his classmate Troy Fautanu once he returns from injury.

Pittsburgh's offensive line will likely be very young in 2024, but the two rookies look like they are ready to take on starting jobs. It will take some time for the new offensive line to gel and get used to playing with one another, but it should be much better in the long run.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Gave An Update On The Health Of Nate Herbig

Herbig has very little experience at center in his NFL career, playing the position for under 50 snaps while he was with the Philadelphia Eagles. Regardless of that, the Steelers listed him as their starting center and he started the team's first preseason game. He struggled a bit in the game, but didn't get a chance to redeem himself Saturday night. Tomlin spoke the severity of his injury.

"Nate's got an injury that is continually being evaluated. I think he is getting a second opinion, but I won't know more until then."

It seems as though Herbig's injury is considered severe, but if he is able to return soon it may be difficult for him to reclaim his starting role. Frazier ultimately has more experience at the position, even if it is just at the college level. Frazier looked like a seasoned professional in his debut as a starter, and he should get the chance to run out with the starters in Week 1. Fans will get to see more of Frazier in Pittsburgh's last preseason game against the Detroit Lions on August 24th.
