The Pittsburgh Steelers have started off the 2024 campaign with a record of 3-0. It has been a lot of fun for the fan base to watch a defense that has allowed less than 10 points per game thus far. A small surprise has been the offense, a unit that has improved week by week with Justin Fields running the show. There is plenty of football to be played, but a main question surrounding Fields and co. has been the wide receiver position. Calvin Austin III stepped up in Week 3 against the Los Angeles Chargers, but if his performance isn't sustainable, what will the organization do?

An opinion that fans of the Steelers value is the one of two-time Super Bowl champion and future Hall of Fame quarterback, Ben Roethlisberger. The legend's podcast, Footbahlin with Ben Roethlisberger, has been popular amongst the Black and Gold faithful since the signal-caller started it, and he is constantly giving his opinion about the organization.
His friend and former center Maurkice Pouncey joined him and Spencer Te'o on the most recent episode and the trio spoke about the state of the team. Pouncey put Roethlisberger on the spot at one point about the squad's need for a play-making wideout aside from George Pickens.
"I ain't going to let Ben lie to y'all, we need a number two receiver, Pouncey said."
Roethlisberger made sure to point out that if he were to get on General Manager Omar Khan about anything, it would be the necessity of having a legitimate second option opposite of Pickens.
"If I'm nit-picking on Omar [Khan] and where I think they could still improve, it's that they need another wide receiver."
There's no doubt that Austin stepped up against the Chargers, but the question about the third-year player's success on Sunday being sustainable has to be analyzed given his underwhelming 2023 campaign.

Steelers wide receiver Calvin Austin III (#19) makes a tough catch as a rookie during a 2022 training camp practice at St. Vincent College in Latrobe, PA.
Roethlisberger wanted to make sure that Austin was acknowledged after stepping up in Week 3, but he was blunt when discussing the idea of the wide receiver being second on the depth chart. He isn't fully confident in rookie Roman Wilson, either.
"Calvin Austin, made a great play [against the Chargers], but he's not your two... and I'm not sure Roman Wilson's your needle-mover. I don't know. We haven't seen it yet. Is he a two? Is he a number two in the NFL?"
The retired quarterback's comments are certainly interesting. The Steelers have found a way to get to 3-0, but the defense has only allowed a total of 26 points. That unit is on a record-breaking pace, while the offense is doing just enough to help the team win. If Arthur Smith's group had just one more dynamic player running routes, the organization could take the next step and compete in the AFC.
Fans will be happy with a strong three-week start to the season, but as the campaign rolls along, it could prove absolutely necessary to go out and acquire a wideout that could immediately step in and make a difference for the franchise. Khan has always been looked at as unpredictable, and Roethlisberger will surely resonate with millions of fans desperate to see at least one playoff win.

Steelers Could Soon Have Wide Receiver Trade Targets
While guys like DeAndre Hopkins and Davante Adams may not be seen as trade candidates after three weeks, the duo's teams have a combined record of 1-5. Neither is expected to be traded just yet, but they could be in the conversation as the deadline approaches in early November. There are other targets that could interest Khan, but the matter of the fact is that Roethlisberger is right. The team absolutely needs someone that can be counted on week in and week out opposite of the dynamic Pickens.
Do you think that the Steelers still need to trade for a wide receiver, or is Austin and the potential of Wilson enough? Let us know in the comments below!
