The Pittsburgh Steelers are a storied franchise with plenty of fans all across the globe. The six-time Super Bowl champions have been earning love throughout the world dating back to an incredible dynasty in the 1970s. The organization is off to a phenomenal start in 2024 as well, which has fueled excitement surrounding the team. Despite the fandom that stretches from sea to sea, Pittsburgh has not had the opportunity to play an international game in quite some time. The last time it occurred was in 2013, when the Steelers took on the Minnesota Vikings in London.

It has been rumored that the Steelers could get another game overseas over a decade later. It is widely known that Art Rooney II and the entire family has deep ties to the Republic of Ireland, and many have speculated about the possibility of a game there in the near future. It was expected that 2025 could see Pittsburgh play a game in Ireland and that reality has become more possible as each day passes.

NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell joined Colleen Wolfe on NFL Network in Germany, where the New York Giants and Carolina Panthers are set to face off in a Week 10 battle. He went into detail about the future of the international series, and gave more fuel to the rumors about a game in Ireland, which would be expected to have the Steelers playing in it.

"We're also looking at the potential of another game in Ireland, possibly, the UK or area, in Ireland," Goodell said. "That's a possibility."

Goodell's comments don't mean that a game in Ireland is set in stone, but he was fairly confident in other host countries. This could be simply because the NFL has not officially agreed to a game there just yet. The Rooney family as a whole should be a good resource and it's almost impossible to imagine a contest there without the Steelers being included.

Steelers' Game In Ireland Has Been A Long Time Coming

Under President Barack Obama, Dan Rooney served as the United States Ambassador to Ireland from 2009 to 2012. This further fuels the fire to rumors about the Steelers playing a game there. While it's not set in stone, it certainly feels like the NFL and Ireland are in deep talks to bring a game there, and Pittsburgh would be the perfect franchise to host the matchup.

Pittsburgh took on the Chicago Bears in a preseason game in Ireland before the 1997 season, but that is the last time that an NFL game was played there. Whether it happens in 2025 or not, it definitely should be coming much sooner rather than later, so Steelers fans should start saving up now for those flights and hotels as it could be less than a year away.
