The Pittsburgh Steelers have had a very successful season in 2024 so far as they sit atop the AFC North with a record of 8-3. They have shattered many people's expectations and have set themselves up to make a good run in the postseason. A large part of Pittsburgh's success in 2024 has been their rookie class, as rookies have stepped up in a big way along the offensive line and on defense. This is a sign of an organization with good coaching that is being run properly, which means the figures making certain decisions in Pittsburgh may be targeted by other teams during the 2025 offseason.

Steelers' Andy Weidl speaks to members of the media.
One prominent figure within the organization who may get a lot of attention once the 2024 season comes to a close is Assistant General Manager Andy Weidl. Weidl has never been a general manager before, but he has certainly built a resume that should qualify him for the job. Prior to Pittsburgh, Weidl helped build up the Baltimore Ravens roster as a scout from 2005 through 2015. He did the same thing with the Philadelphia Eagles where he eventually became the vice president of player personnel. One team who may seek the services of Weidl is the New York Jets, who recently fired their General Manager Joe Douglas.

Douglas did a good job drafting high-level talent during his time in New York, but the team didn't see much success during his tenure. The Jets will be in the market for a new general manager, and Weidl should be at the top of their list of candidates to bring in for an interview. His roster building experience is unblemished as it has led organizations he has been with to winning two Super Bowls.

Pittsburgh Steelers Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith during New York Jets game in 2024.
The Jets may not stop at the front office when it comes to picking apart the Steelers during the 2025 offseason. The organization fired Robert Saleh as their head coach early in the 2024 season, and Interim Head Coach Jeff Ulbrich has done nothing but struggle since taking the reigns. Pittsburgh's Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith is expected to see some interest from teams looking for a new and experienced head coach.
Smith has been criticized some for the way he has called the offense for the Steelers during the 2024 season, but ultimately, he has improved the unit a lot from what it was in recent years. He served as the head coach of the Atlanta Falcons for three seasons and didn't see much success, but that experience is attractive to some teams with a coaching vacancy. This is the main reason insider Dianna Russini cited for Smith getting interest during the 2025 offseason, as some teams don't want to deal with the trials and tribulations of a first-year head coach.
Steelers May Lose Some Players To The New York Jets As Well
New York will be in the market for a new quarterback once the 2024 season comes to a close. The Aaron Rodgers experiment didn't go as planned as he missed nearly the entire season in his first year with the team and has looked like a shell of himself in his second season. The quarterback is signed with the organization through the 2025 season, but the two sides are expected to part ways after 2024.
It appears “increasingly likely” that the Jets will place Aaron Rodgers on IR or bench him over the next few weeks, per @DMRussini

It’s also a possibility the Jets simply cut Rodgers midseason.

The Jets have a couple avenues to explore when it comes to finding a new quarterback for the 2025 season. The organization could explore options through the NFL Draft, free agency, or both. A name to watch will be Justin Fields, who is a free agent after the 2024 season. Even if the Jets draft a quarterback, Fields could still be an option as a bridge player.

Steelers quarterback Justin Fields warms up on the field as the team gets ready to play a 2024 preseason game at Acrisure Stadium in Pittsburgh, PA.
The first domino to fall in this saga would have to be Weidl being offered the job in New York. The Jets will likely find their next general manager before starting the hiring process at head coach or acquiring any players. If he ends up becoming the next general manager of the Jets, his familiarity with Smith and Fields makes the likelihood of the two ending up in New York even higher.
