Pittsburgh Steelers' Mike Tomlin has remarkably never had a losing season in his 17 years in Pittsburgh. Now in his 18th season as head coach, Tomlin is on the verge of another milestone—one more win will guarantee yet another non-losing season. This is an incredible achievement, especially in the brutal landscape of the NFL, where consistency is rare. However, despite this remarkable streak, Tomlin faces constant criticism, particularly for his team's failure to win a playoff game since the 2016 season.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin speaks to the media after a Week 12 loss to the Browns in the 2024 season.

After the Steelers' 24-19 loss to the Cleveland Browns, fans took to social media, expressing frustration with Tomlin's coaching decisions.

Much of the criticism centered around his clock management, poor timeout usage, and questionable in-game decisions that seemed to leave the team in difficult situations. These moments led to a wave of disappointment, especially from fans who have grown impatient with the Steelers' lack of postseason success in recent years.

Steelers insider Brian Batko was asked about Tomlin’s performance in these type of losses, particularly regarding his poor challenge calls and time management struggles. While Batko agreed that Tomlin has made some questionable choices, he offered a controversial perspective that could change how Steeler Nation views the situation. Batko suggested that despite these flaws, Tomlin's ability to keep the team competitive year after year in an unpredictable league should be viewed as a far greater accomplishment, one that requires more context than the typical fan criticism.

"I'm with you on that, been saying for a while now that the lack of support staffers is an issue with challenges," Batko said. "And I do connect it to the overall relative lack of manpower in the organization. But I'll counter with this: If he's so bad at it, why are the Steelers so successful in close games? They lost this most recent one, but in the grand scheme, Tomlin's record in one-possession games is excellent."

The first counter Steelers fans would likely offer to Batko’s perspective is that the frequency of one-score games is part of the problem. Many believe that the close nature of so many games in recent years reflects poorly on Tomlin, suggesting that his teams are too often on the edge of failure.

Batko, however, views this situation as a more complex issue, suggesting that while these close games are telling, they also highlight Tomlin's ability to keep his teams competitive despite challenges.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin Facing Mounting Pressure From The Fan Base

The truth is, Tomlin is one of the best head coaches in the NFL and is destined to leave a lasting legacy. His leadership is undeniable, and year after year, he has managed to keep his teams in the hunt, no matter the roster changes or setbacks. However, the criticism from the fan base is unlikely to subside until Tomlin and the Steelers finally make a deep playoff run.

The 2024 season has a special feel to it, and one loss to the Browns on the road during a short week shouldn't change that. While Tomlin may have a history of losing games he shouldn't, this is a pattern shared by many of the NFL's top head coaches. What sets Tomlin apart is his ability to get his teams to bounce back, and many expect the Steelers will do just that in response to this setback.
