The Pittsburgh Steelers have seen the success that Arthur Smith can bring to the offense. Smith's offensive scheme has the unit averaging 22.9 points per game so far this season, the best the offense has put up since the 2020 season (26 points per game). While the group has struggled the last few weeks, they have shown the potential heading into their late season stretch. Unfortunately however, Smith's time with Pittsburgh could come to an end sooner than expected and he could be taking a quarterback with him.

From Jason Mackey of the Post-Gazette, he pointed out a piece in The Washington Post written by Jason La Canfora, stating that Smith could become the next New York Giants head coach going into the 2025 season if the Steelers continue to win. Not only would the Steelers lose their offensive coordinator after just one season, they could lose Justin Fields as the Giants would be looking to find their next starting quarterback after releasing Daniel Jones earlier this season.
"I could see him with the Giants. He fits their profile [Smith] - kind of buttoned-up guy, offensive side of the ball, doesn't say a whole lot, not great with the media," La Canfora quoting his source. "And what are they going to do at quarterback? He's already working with Justin Fields. Everybody in that building loves Fields. I could just kind of see that being their next move."
With the Steelers likely sticking with Russell Wilson for the remainder of the season and possibly for the future, Fields could look for a starting opportunity elsewhere. Fields is still very young and wants to prove that he is an NFL starting quarterback. If Smith were to take the head coaching position with the Giants, Fields might want to play for a coach that he is already familiar with and knows what he brings to the table at quarterback. Smith even made the comment earlier this season that the Steelers have two starting quarterbacks on their roster. If Smith were to leave, he would want to insert a quarterback that is familiar to his system.

Smith's first stint as a head coach didn't go as he had hoped for. He finished all three seasons for the Atlanta Falcons at 7-10 and never making an appearance in the playoffs. While he had Matt Ryan at the tail end of his career and Desmond Ridder as his quarterbacks in Atlanta, he has proven he can win with Fields as his starter. Fields is 4-2 in Smith's offense and has been used the last two weeks for the Steelers in special packages.
While the Steelers' offense hasn't been perfect this season, it's been a breath of fresh air compared to the Matt Canada era. In just 11 games, the offense this season has already eclipse the 400 total-yard mark three times, where Canada never touched that mark. While the offense and Smith have been getting some heat after their performances in their first two divisional games, Smith has outshined everything Canada tried doing in his two and a half year stint in Pittsburgh.

While the Steelers are still content with Wilson as their starter this season, the decision of who will be leading the offense next season still hasn't been fully answered. While both quarterbacks have their pros and cons, the front office is looking for the one that gives them the best chance of winning now. A decision that could be out of their hands if Smith tries his hand at head coaching once again.
Steelers Could Be Looking For A New Offensive Coordinator In The 2025 Offseason
The Steelers' winning ways could have them back on the market for an offensive coordinator after the season ends. Not only that, the choice of who will be their quarterback next season could be answered for them if Fields decides to follow Smith to New York. Fields will be just 26 years old at the start of the 2025 season, giving the Giants their franchise quarterback for years to come and a full year of experience in Smith's offense.
