The Pittsburgh Steelers brought in Offensive Coordinator Arthur Smith to fix their historically bad offense. In the 2024 season, there have been noticeable improvements, but the offense still has a long way to go before fans will be satisfied. The offense gave fans promise with a dominant 44-point showing against the Cincinnati Bengals just over a month ago, but the offense has since become inconsistent and predictable, leaving many questioning if the improvements are sustainable.

Steelers' Mike Tomlin and Arthur Smith celebrate a big win.
Just a month ago, Russell Wilson appeared revived under Smith's guidance, and Steelers Head Coach Mike Tomlin seemed like a genius for his decision to bring in the new offensive coordinator and start Wilson. The offense clicked, with Smith's play-calling generating big plays and solid execution from key players. However, the excitement has waned, as the offense now struggles to find its rhythm and is bogged down by predictability, frustrating fans and analysts alike.

Despite the downturn in performance, Smith's reputation as an offensive mind has not gone unnoticed. Teams in need of a head coach, such as the New York Jets, have continued to show interest in him. On Monday, the Jets and Chicago Bears officially requested to interview Smith, signaling that his work with the Steelers is being recognized outside of Pittsburgh. Steelers insider Mark Kaboly offered more insight into the situation, hinting at the complex dynamics between Smith's current role and his potential future with other teams.
What I was told is that Arthur Smith is extremely happy in Pittsburgh. Would have be the perfect fit for him to be head coach somewhere else.

Not sure if NY Jets is a perfect fit for anybody.
Based on what Kaboly is hearing, it doesn't seem like Smith would be particularly eager to take the Jets' head coaching job, even if offered. While Smith is interested in returning to a head coaching role, he would need an ideal fit, and the Jets, currently a mess from top to bottom, don't seem like the right opportunity.
Smith has enjoyed working with Tomlin in Pittsburgh, and there's still significant potential with both of them on staff. However, recent execution has been lacking, especially on the offensive side of the ball. The most glaring indictment of the coaching duo is the stark contrast between the Steelers’ offensive masterclass, scoring 44 points against the Bengals just a month ago, and the struggles they’ve faced since.
Steelers' Arthur Smith And Mike Tomlin Failed Big Time Against The Bengals
Rather than continuing with what worked, the Steelers opted to change their approach. Tomlin and Smith entered the regular season finale determined to establish the run and control the clock. Unfortunately, the run game stalled, and the passing game took far too long to get going. It ended up being one of the worst-prepared games Steeler Nation has seen in a long time, especially considering the extra time they had to prepare.
A few seasons ago, Smith was one of the hottest names in the coaching world after making a name for himself with the Tennessee Titans. However, his three seasons with the Atlanta Falcons significantly altered the perception of his coaching abilities. Now, Smith is eager to resolve the offensive issues in Pittsburgh and lead the team on a deep playoff run. If he's successful, it's likely that more teams will come calling for him to be their head coach.

However, if his offense struggles again in the playoffs, it will be intriguing to see how teams assess his first season in Pittsburgh. Smith and Tomlin failed big time against the Bengals. They now will look to fix things fast before seeing the Baltimore Ravens in round one of the playoffs.
