Steelers' True Interest In Jets' Aaron Rodgers Gets Exposed: "I Can Tell You"

The Pittsburgh Steelers have some big decisions to make after a brutal end to the 2024 season. The Steelers were flying high with Russell Wilson at one point sitting at 10-3, but then they lost five straight games. Justin Fields started the season looking decent and leading Pittsburgh to a 4-2 record. However, Mike Tomlin benched him for Wilson when he was healthy to return. The Steelers were lucky to have both Wilson and Fields for cheap in 2024, but if they want them back in 2025, it's going to be more expensive.

With the quarterback position in flux, the Steelers face a tough call on how to approach their future under center. The team had high hopes for both Wilson and Fields, but inconsistent play and a shaky end to the season have left Pittsburgh wondering if it's time for a change. They may need to make some tough financial decisions regarding both quarterbacks or possibly explore other options.

One such idea has emerged from the rumor mill, suggesting that the 41-year-old Aaron Rodgers, currently with the New York Jets, could be an option for Pittsburgh. The prospect of bringing in the future Hall of Famer is intriguing, but it raises plenty of questions about Rodgers' potential fit in the Steelers' offense. Steelers insider Gerry Dulac joined The Rich Eisen Show to shed some light on whether Pittsburgh has any real interest in Rodgers, keeping fans guessing about the team's next move at quarterback.

"I can tell you it won't be Aaron Rodgers," Dulac said. "They have no interest in doing that."

This insight from Dulac effectively puts to rest any speculation about Rodgers joining the Steelers. For starters, Rodgers is 41 years old and still uncertain about whether he even wants to continue playing. Even if Pittsburgh were to target him, the fit seems unlikely, as the Steelers' offensive line would not provide the protection Rodgers needs to avoid the same struggles he faced with the Jets.

Jets' Aaron Rodgers speaks to the media after loss to Steelers.

Rodgers returned from a significant injury for the 2024 season, carrying high expectations that the Jets would become Super Bowl contenders with him at the helm. Instead, the Jets endured a brutal 5-12 season, a major disappointment for the organization. While the team floundered, Rodgers performed well individually, completing 63% of his passes for 3,897 yards, 28 touchdowns, and 11 interceptions.

Despite his solid personal stats, the lack of team success underscores the challenges of building a contender around Rodgers at this stage in his career. For the Steelers, bringing him in would likely raise more questions than answers about the future of their quarterback position.

Steelers Fans Don't Want Aaron Rodgers In Pittsburgh

The idea of bringing Rodgers to the Steel City hasn’t gained much traction among Steelers fans. They watched Rodgers struggle behind a shaky offensive line with the Jets, a situation eerily similar to what Wilson faced in Pittsburgh down the stretch. Having already rolled the dice with an aging quarterback, the Steelers would likely find themselves in an even worse position with Rodgers.

Even if Rodgers somehow decided to join Pittsburgh on a veteran minimum deal, it’s hard to imagine the move generating much excitement. Fans are looking for a long-term solution at quarterback, not another short-term gamble that mirrors past missteps. It also seems more likely than not that Rodgers is set to hang up his cleats and ride off into retirement after taking a lot of punishment with the Jets in 2024.

Rodgers and Tomlin share a deep mutual respect, with a history that dates back to Rodgers leading the Green Bay Packers to a Super Bowl victory over Tomlin’s Steelers. Both are revered NFL legends who will undoubtedly be remembered among the game’s greats, which has led some pundits to speculate about the possibility of them teaming up.

However, thanks to Dulac’s insight, Steelers fans can breathe a sigh of relief knowing Rodgers won’t be suiting up in Pittsburgh in 2025. The speculation can now be put to rest, allowing the team to focus on more viable options for their future at quarterback.
